Savacool Complete Game Powers Terps Past Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Freshman right-hander Jason Savacool tossed his second career complete game in just his third collegiate start, going the distance and earning the win as Maryland powered past Penn State with a 7-1 victory on Monday afternoon at Medlar Field.

What You Should Know
  • Jason Savacool couldn't ask for a much better start to his freshman campaign than the one he's off to so far. In just three starts as a college starting pitcher, Savacool has tossed two complete games and is a perfect 3-0 on the bump.
  • The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native spun another gem today as he made quick work of the Nittany Lions, allowing just five hits, one unearned run, no walks, and three strikeouts. All on 92 pitches.
  • Maryland's offense was productive on the afternoon as eight different Terps recorded hits. Randy Bednar had the only multi-hit game, while Chris Alleyne and Luke Shliger both drove in multiple runs against Penn State.
  • The Terps jumped on Penn State starter Kyle Virbitsky early, belting at least one hit in each inning before breaking through in the third with a Shliger RBI single.
  • Meanwhile, Savacool cruised through three scoreless innings before running into some trouble in the fourth. The freshman loaded the bags with no outs but remarkably escaped the inning with just a single unearned run scoring.
  • Maryland plated a pair of runs in the fifth, forcing Penn State to go to the bullpen after Bobby Zmarzlak's RBI single and Shliger's sac fly gave the Terps a 3-1 advantage.
  • Alleyne blasted his second homer of the season over the right field wall to lead off the sixth inning and extend Maryland's lead to three.
  • Three walks and two passed balls from the Nittany Lions snowballed on Penn State as Maryland plated three runs in the seventh to make it a 7-1 ballgame.
  • Savacool cruised with the 7-1 lead, retiring the last nine batters he faced in order.
Up Next
  • Maryland heads to its first "pod" weekend of the season where it will face Ohio State and Iowa in Columbus, Ohio. Maryland is set to play Iowa on Saturday and Sunday, and Ohio State on Sunday afternoon and Monday.
