Colson, Griffin Garner Weekly Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Two members of the No. 7 Maryland women's lacrosse team, Lizzie Colson and Grace Griffin, earned both National and Big Ten weekly recognition for their performances against Ohio State, as announced on Tuesday.
Colson was named both the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week and the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Griffin was selected as the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week.
Colson had a sensational weekend, filling up the stat sheet and leading the Maryland defense which held Ohio State to only 14 goals (seven per game) in the Terps two wins. The senior recorded nine groundballs, 16 draw controls and six caused turnovers, leading the Terps in each category, while also assisting on a goal off a won draw control in Sunday's win. In Thursday's 14-9 win, Colson had a career day, picking up five groundballs, causing four turnovers (both career-highs), and winning eight draw controls. The redshirt senior followed up Thursday's performance with another eight draw controls, four groundballs and two caused turnovers in Saturday's win, where Colson's defense held Ohio State to only five goals, just 23 shots, forced 17 turnovers, and limited them to just a .217 shooting percentage. Colson now leads the country, averaging three caused turnovers per game.
In the Terps two wins over Ohio State this past weekend, Griffin tallied five goals, six assists, 11 points, four groundballs, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Griffin was sensational in Thursday's win, posting a career-high eight points on four goals and a career-best four assists. The senior scored four goals alone in the first half and assisted on another to help Maryland build an 8-2 lead before assisting on another three Terrapin goals in the second half. Griffin followed up her career day on Thursday with another goal and two assists in Saturday's win over the Buckeyes, while helping lead the Maryland defense that held Ohio State to only five goals. The Sykesville, Md. native now leads Maryland with eight assists and stands second in goals (12) and points (20).
This is Colson's first ever IWLCA National Player of the Week honor as she becomes the first Terp to win the award since Megan Taylor garnered recognition three times in 2019. Colson has now earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week recognition for the second week in a row and sixth time in her career. Maryland has now won four Big Ten weekly honors this season, two from Colson, one from Griffin and Hannah Leubecker earning Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 2.
This is Griffin's first Big Ten Midfielder of the Week honor as the conference began honoring the award this season and her third Big Ten weekly honor, twice winning Freshman of the Week in 2018 en route to being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Maryland will be back in action this Saturday for a top-10 matchup in Evanston as the Terps face Northwestern for two games, the first on Saturday, March 27 at noon and the second on Monday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m., which will air on the Big Ten Network.
