Terps Drop Two To Michigan State

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The University of Maryland baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader vs. Michigan State on Saturday at Fluor Field. Maryland returns to action Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET for the series finale vs. the Spartans.

What You Should Know
  • Michigan State took the lead early on in game one and never relinquished it, leading wire-to-wire to secure the Spartans' second-consecutive win.
  • Vice versa, Maryland led for the majority of game two, but a four-run bottom of the seventh gave Michigan State a lead they wouldn't concede as they clinched the series.
  • Sophomore right-hander Connor Staine was sensational in his first college start. The New Jersey native tossed six innings of one-run ball, striking out nine, while not issuing a single walk. Staine was poised to get the win in his starting pitching debut until the Spartans took advantage of the Maryland bullpen and some poor defensive plays.
  • While Maryland made improvements offensively from Opening Night, the Terps left too many men on base - nine in game one, seven in game two.
  • There weren't a lack of quality scoring opportunities for Maryland. In the eighth and the ninth innings of game two, Maryland left the go-ahead run on base.
  • Freshman infielder Matt Shaw had a pair of hits in game one. In game two, he made his first start at third base.
  • Junior first baseman Maxwell Costes had a three-hit day. Randy Bednar also had a hit in each game.
  • Junior shortstop Benjamin Cowles launched the Terps' first home run of the season. It was a solo blast in the ninth inning of game one.
Up Next
  • Maryland closes out the series with Michigan State on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
