Savacool Shines in Debut, Maryland Beats MSU 3-2

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman right-handed pitcher Jason Savacool spun a complete game in his collegiate debut, allowing just two runs - only one of them earned - and the Maryland baseball team held on to win its first game of the season, 3-2 at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. on Sunday.

What You Should Know
  • Savacool was sensational in his first start toeing the collegiate rubber. The highly-touted freshman recruit was one of the top prospects in the country coming out of high school - ranked the No. 2 RHP in the state of New York and the 19th-best right-handed pitching prospect in the nation. The 2019 New York State Gatorade Player of the Year did not disappoint in his first outing donning the Maryland uniform, going the distance against a Michigan State lineup that had given the Terrapin pitching staff trouble throughout the series.
  • The freshman righty allowed just six hits and one earned run, firing off a meager 103 pitches to keep the Spartans at bay over nine innings of work. Savacool becomes the first Terp to pitch nine or more innings since Hunter Parsons tossed a nine-inning complete game shutout over Stetson on March 25, 2018.
  • Savacool's battery-mate and fellow freshman Luke Shliger had the best day at the plate for the Terps, going 2-for-3 and scoring a run. The catcher from Danbury, Conn. was also exceptional behind the plate, at one point ending an inning by catching a Spartan baserunner attempting to steal second.
  • The Terps first got on the board in the second inning via a Troy Schreffler sacrifice fly. Zmarzlak led off the inning with a hard hit single, advanced to second after Costes walked, took third on a Shliger sacrifice bunt, and was brought home on Schreffler's sac fly. Maryland added another in the third on a Randy Bednar RBI single, then was held scoreless until Benjamin Cowles drove in the eventual winning run on an RBI single.
  • Maryland (1-3) was able to find some good in a series that was mostly controlled by Michigan State (3-1) from the jump. Despite getting three quality starts from the Maryland staff, the Terps hit just .200 as a team, and more alarmingly, .103 with runners in scoring position.
  • The Terrapin offense was also lacking in the extra-base hit department, tallying just four through the first four games.
