Terps Take Down Buckeyes In Series Opener, 10-6

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team won the series-opener against Ohio State in College Park on Saturday night, defeating the Buckeyes 10-6. Maryland starter Sean Burke went six strong innings on the mound, securing his second win of the season, while Chris Alleyne on the offensive side pushed across three-runs in the sixth which opened up the Friday night tilt.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland improves to 11-12 on the season while Ohio State drops to 13-10. Maryland is currently in a tie for eighth place in the Big Ten conference, while Ohio State stands alone in fifth.
  • The Buckeyes opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. Maryland responded in the bottom half of the second as Tucker Flint drove Benjamin Cowles home with a double into the gap in right center.
  • The Terps took their first lead of the game as a grounder from Matthew Shaw allowed a run to come across in the third.
  • Ohio State tied the game up again in the fifth, as a safety squeeze pushed the tying run across.
  • Maryland used a seven-run fifth inning to take the lead and pull away from the Buckeyes. Despite only tallying three hits in the inning, Maryland's runs came across on a wild pitch, bases-loaded HBP, Alleyne three-run double, and Shaw RBI single.
  • Sean Heine entered in the seventh after six strong innings from Burke in his seventh start of the season. Burke was efficient as he had been all season, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out eight. Burke cruised once settling in, at one point striking out four consecutive batters where he struck out the side in the third on 10 pitches.
  • Heine allowed one run on a single hit, keeping Maryland firmly in the driver's seat of the Friday night affair. The Terps scored their 10th run in the bottom half of the seventh on a Tommy Gardiner sacrifice fly. Maryland has now scored double-digit runs in five games this season.
  • Tyler Blohm was the next man out of the Maryland bullpen, as the lefty tossed a clean eighth inning before allowing a trio of runs in the ninth. Sidewinding senior Elliot Zoellner faced the last batter of the game, as he forced a grounder to Shaw.
