COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- For the third time this season and seventh time in her career, Lizzie Colson was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Colson led the Maryland defense in games against No. 20 Johns Hopkins and No. 24 Rutgers, tallying eight caused turnovers, 12 draw controls and five groundballs. The graduate student led the defense that held Johns Hopkins to a season-low eight goals, causing four turnovers and picking up a groundball, while winning five draws. Colson helped put the game away, winning the biggest draw of the game, securing the ball after Maryland took a 9-8 lead to give the Terps possession back with 39 seconds left to ice the game.
Against No. 24 Rutgers, Colson posted another four caused turnovers, four groundballs, and a season-best seven draw controls.
Colson stands second in the country and leads the Big Ten, averaging 3.08 caused turnovers per game and sixth in the country, while also leading the Big Ten, averaging 3.67 groundballs per game. The captain has 14 more caused turnovers than anyone else in the Big Ten and eight more groundballs than anyone. She currently stands sixth all-time in the single season Maryland record book with 37 caused turnover and sixth in the all-time record book with 94 career caused turnovers.
This is Colson's third Big Ten weekly honor of the year, the most of any defender, also earning recognition on March 16 and March 23. Last week, Colson was named a First Team Midseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse.
Colson and the Terps will play in the Big Ten Tournament next weekend from April 29 to May 2 at Panzer Stadium on the campus of Penn State.
