Terps Drop Series Opener At Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Maryland baseball team dropped its series opener to Iowa, 6-2, on Friday night at Duane Banks Field on the campus of the University of Iowa.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland forced Iowa ace Trenton Wallace to work through some trouble in the early innings as the Terps left runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings
  • The Terps chased the Hawkeye ace after just four and a third innings of work, his third shortest start of the season. Despite only allowing a single run - on a Matthew Shaw third-inning sacrifice fly - Wallace hit nearly 100 pitches in the midst of the fifth inning.
  • Maryland's lineup was quiet offensively, collecting just five total base hits on the evening. 1 through 3 in the order - Alleyne, Shaw, and Cowles - had a hit each, while freshman second baseman Kevin Keister had his first multi-hit game of his career with a pair of base knocks.
  • Sean Burke delivered one of his best starts of the season, working deep into the sixth inning after an evening in which he struck out 10 Hawkeye batters and allowed three runs on three hits. Burke was sensational through the first five innings, tossing five scoreless frames and recording nine strikeouts, at one point retiring 10 consecutive batters.
  • Iowa scratched three runs across in the sixth inning at the tail end of Burke's start, added a pair of runs in the seventh, and tallied one more in the eighth.
