IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Maryland baseball team won both games of its Saturday doubleheader, avenging Friday night's loss and beating Iowa 8-6 in game one and winning a tight 2-1 battle against Northwestern in the nightcap. Maryland got a pair of stellar starts from
Nick Dean and
Logan Ott, while
Matthew Shaw led the Terps offensively going 5-for-9 with three RBI at the plate between the two games.
What You Should Know (Game One)
- The Terps took Game One against Iowa, 8-6.
- Maryland got on the board quickly with three runs in the first inning, courtesy of a Benjamin Cowles three-run home run. Cowles' 12th homer of the season improves on his conference-leading mark, while also stretching his Big Ten lead in RBIs, now with 35Â on the season.
- Maryland got another in the fourth off a Shaw RBI single that chased Hawkeye starter Drew Irvine after just three-plus innings of work.Â
- Meanwhile, Maryland starter Nick Dean cruised through the Iowa lineup, working five scoreless innings before allowing a little bit of damage in the sixth.
- The sophomore right-hander allowed a two-out, two-run double before an error brought the third Hawkeye run of the inning home. Despite allowing three runs in the inning, he still set himself up for the win, going six innings allowing three runs (two earned), scattering eight hits, and striking out six batters.
- The Terps battled back in the seventh, putting up a crooked number as RBI base knocks from Tommy Gardiner, Tucker Flint, and Shaw made it an 8-3 ballgame.
- Iowa got two back in the eighth - and one more in the ninth - but Maryland closer Sam Bello was able to slam the door and earn his fifth save of the season.
What You Should Know (Game Two)
- Maryland won a tightly contested battle against Northwestern in Game Two, 2-1.
- Terps' skipper Rob Vaughn handed the ball off to freshman left-hander Logan Ott to make his first career start and first collegiate appearance on the mound.
- The Terps went down quietly in the first two innings, facing Northwestern ace Mike Doherty.
- Northwestern got on the board first, hitting into two consecutive fielder's choices before a RBI double pushed the first run of the game across.
- Maryland responded with a pair of their own in the third as Cowles drove one in on a line drive to left field and an errant play on a Maxwell Costes grounder allowed another run to come across.
- Ott continued to carve through the Wildcat lineup, retiring the side in order in the third, facing just one above the minimum in the fourth and fifth, and retiring the side in order in the sixth to end his afternoon.
- Ott's six innings of one-run, five-hit, five strikeout ball was not only impressive because it was his first collegiate pitching performance, but the freshman wasn't aware that he would be starting the game until after the first game of the doubleheader.
- As each team worked through their respective bullpens - Maryland handing the rock off to Sean Heine, Tyler Blohm, and David Falco - neither team could generate much offense in the nightcap.
- After Blohm allowed a hit and a walk in the eighth, Falco entered in relief and stranded the bases loaded after a leadoff walk of his own. The redshirt freshman flamethrower came out again for the ninth and closed it out for the Terrapins, earning his first career save.
