Terps Win Third Straight, Beat Northwestern 8-4

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Northwestern, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The win was Maryland's third consecutive win, as the Terps look to make it four on Sunday against No. 25 Michigan.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland secured its third-consecutive come-from-behind win on Saturday afternoon, beating Northwestern to sweep the Wildcats in College Park in the first half of the Terps' pod series with Northwestern and Michigan.
  • Northwestern struck first, scoring two in the first inning on a two-run homer. The Terps went down quietly offensively in the first two innings, but got on the board via Matt Shaw double that scored Randy Bednar and made it a one-run ballgame.
  • Tommy Gardiner gave the Terps the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run blast that scorched out of the park and over the batter's eye in center field. Gardiner's homer was the third of his season and just the third of his career.
  • The Wildcats quickly tied the game up again with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. They grabed the lead again in the sixth with another homer off reliever Ryan Ramsey.
  • Maryland jumped on top in the bottom half of the sixth as Gardiner singled home the tying run and Costes drove home a pair to give the Terps a 6-4 advantage.
  • Ramsey cruised through the Wildcat lineup, leaving them scoreless for the remainder of the game, while Costes drove across two more insurance runs in the eighth.
  • Nick Dean was steady in his second start since returning from illness, working five innings allowing just three runs on a limited pitch count. Ramsey did a fine job out of the bullpen, cleaning up the final four innings of the game, allowing just a single hit - a solo homer - while striking out six to secure his first win of the season.
