Terps Explode For 17 Runs In Win Vs. #25 Michigan

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team completed its four-game "pod" series - winning three of four - with a 17-7 win over No. 25 Michigan on Monday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland's offense exploded against Michigan in the last game of the pod series, scoring 17 runs, the second-most runs Maryland has scored this season. The 17 runs scored ties for the second-most Maryland has ever scored in Big Ten conference play.
  • All nine of Maryland's starting batters reached base and scored at least one run, while eight of Maryland's nine starters collected base hits, and five tallied multi-hit days.
  • Center fielder Chris Alleyne paced the Maryland offense at the top of the lineup, going 4-for-5 with 5 RBI and two runs scored. Alleyne's four hits was the first four-hit day for a Terp since his record-tying six-hit game against Bryant in 2020.
  • Shortstop Benjamin Cowles remained hot in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 on the day with a team-high four runs scored. Cowles' fourth-inning home run was his ninth of the season, now tied at the top of the Big Ten leaderboard with Rutgers slugger Chris Brito.
  • The Terps opened the scoring immediately in the first inning as Alleyne's leadoff single turned into the first run of the game on a wild pitch, stolen base, and Costes sac fly.
  • Michigan put up four runs in the second, roughing up Maryland starter Jason Savacool and taking an early three-run lead.
  • Second baseman Tommy Gardiner's second-inning two-run homer cut the deficit to one. Gardiner's home run sailed over the batter's eye in center field for his fourth home run of the season.
  • Perspective: Maryland's two leading home run hitters in Cowles and Gardiner bat sixth and ninth today, respectively.
  • A two-run homer from Michigan slugger Christian Molfetta gave the Wolverines a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning. Cowles' answering-shot in the bottom half of the inning made it a two-run game.
  • The Terrapin offense was uncorked in the fifth, as four runs came across on a mishandled infield grounder from Shliger, a bases-loaded HBP, and an Alleyne two-run single.
  • Maryland continued to pour it on in the sixth, as RBI base knocks from Shliger, Flint, Alleyne, Costes, and Shaw plated Maryland runners.
  • A triple from Alleyne pushed across another two runners as Maryland took a 17-6 lead heading into the eighth inning.
  • Michigan got a pinch-hit homer from Brandon Lawrence in the ninth to cut the Wolverine deficit to 10 runs.
  • Savacool was shaky in his fifth start of the season, going two-plus innings allowing four runs on four hits.
  • Maryland's bullpen did an exceptional job in a Monday tilt in which it would usually be depleted. Sean Heine and Tyler Blohm gave solid efforts as they ate up a combined three and a third innings in relief of Savacool.
  • Sam Bello pitched the final three and two third innings of the game and was credited with his third save of the season.

  • Maryland travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers for a three-game series at Haymarket Park April 9-11. All games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus and broadcast on the Maryland Baseball Network.
