Terps Walk Off Minnesota, Win Series

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team walked off Minnesota, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in College Park. Tommy Gardiner drew the game-winning bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth as the Terps clinched their fifth straight win and third consecutive series win.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland clinched its third-consecutive series win with Saturday's 4-3 win over the Gophers. The Terps will try to complete the three-game series sweep on Sunday at noon in College Park.
  • Jason Savacool got the start on the mound and turned in a solid six innings of two-run ball, striking out five. The freshman right-hander surrendered a two-run homer in the second inning but would put up zeroes in the next four frames before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
  • The Terps got muliple base hits from Chris Alleyne and Matthew Shaw, batting leadoff and second, respectively. The one-two punch of Alleyne and Shaw at the top of the order also scored two runs each.
  • Savacool worked a perfect first which was followed up by a leadoff home run from Alleyne on Minnesota's second pitch of the day. Alleyne's blast was his fifth of the season, second on the team only to shortstop Benjamin Cowles (13).
  • Minnesota got on the board in the second, as a single and long ball gave the Gophers a one-run advantage.
  • Both Maryland and Minnesota's lineups went down quietly into the sixth inning, as Savacool and Minnesota starter Jack Liffrig battled in a vintage pitcher's duel through the middle innings on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in College Park.
  • Maxwell Costes drove in the then game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth off the lefty Gopher starter, only to lose the lead again once Maryland got into the bullpen in the top half of the seventh as an unearned run came across. Sean Heine faced a pair of batters before giving way to senior sidewinder Elliot Zoellner, who struck out the next two batters he faced.
  • Maryland again scored the tying run in the next frame, as an RBI single from Shaw gave the Terps their third run of the afternoon. Despite a bases-loaded situation, Maryland couldn't get any more across in Luke Shliger's controversial at-bat.
  • The Terps and Gophers couldn't scratch a run across in either half of the eighth, and the ballgame would remain tied heading into the ninth. Veteran southpaw Sean Fisher tossed a 1-2-3 ninth before giving way to the offense in the bottom half looking for a walk-off win.
  • Maryland quickly fell to its last out of the inning with just Shaw - who reached on a walk - on the basepaths. Shaw made an exceptional dirt ball read and swiped second, opening up first base, where Maxwell Costes would be intentionally walked to set up a force at three bases.
  • Shliger was the next man up and walked on four pitches to load the bags, setting up a bases-loaded opportunity for veteran infielder Tommy Gardiner. The senior third baseman drew the bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for Maryland. It was the second walk-off walk of Maryland's season - as Luke Shliger walked in the same situation two weeks ago to the day against Ohio State.
Up Next
