#12 Terps to Face High Point in NCAA First Round

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 12 Maryland women's lacrosse team will open up its 31st-straight NCAA Tournament run against the Big South Champion High Point Panthers on Friday, May 14 at 7:00 p.m. on the campus of Duke University. 

HIGH POINT STORYLINES

LOCKDOWN LIZZIE
  • The leader of this year's Maryland team and the Big Ten Defender of the Year, defender Lizzie Colson has had a sensational year for the Terps, solidifying her place as one of the top defenders in the country.
  • Colson leads the country with 42 caused turnovers this season and has 13 more caused turnovers than anyone else in the Big Ten.
  • An Inside Lacrosse First Team Midseason All-American and Tewaaraton Nominee, Colson also leads the Big Ten with 51 groundballs, 11 more than anyone else in the league.
  • Through only 15 games, Colson stands tied for third all-time in program history for single season caused turnovers while also ranking sixth all-time in program history with 99 career caused turnovers.
  • A three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week (3/23) and Inside Lacrosse National Player if the Week  (3/25), Colson is also third in program lore with 313 draw controls.
  • Colson has at least four groundballs in nine-of-15 games this season and at least three caused turnovers in eight-of-15 games.

HISTORIC HANNAH
  •  Attacker Hannah Leubecker has starred for Maryland offensively this season, leading the Terps and standing 16th in the country with 53 goals, averaging 3.53 per game, the third-most in the Big Ten.
  • Leubecker set the program record for the most goals through the first eight games of the season with 35 and was tied with all-time leading scorer Megan Whittle for the most goals through the first 10 games of the season with 38.
  • The sophomore has at least two goals in 12-of-15 games this season and at least a hat-trick in eight-of-14 games, with two seven goal games, and a six goal game, Leubecker was named a First Team All-Big Ten selection.

TOURNEY TIME
  • Maryland enters the 2021 NCAA Tournament as the defending National Champions, winning the last tournament played in 2019 when the Terps defeated Boston College, 12-10 in the championship.
  • The Terps lead the nation with 36 NCAA appearances and are also tops in wins (75), championship game appearances (22) and NCAA titles (14). The Terps are making their 31st consecutive appearance in the postseason (1990-2021). 
  • The Terps have made 11-straight Final Fours dating back to 2009.
  • Under Cathy Reese, Maryland has five National Championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019). Reese is 37-8 at Maryland in the NCAA Tournament, making 11 Final Fours and seven championship games.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Maryland and High Point have only met once, in the 2017 NCAA Second Round.
  • The Terps defeated the Panthers, 21-6, behind five goals from Megan Whittle, five points from Zoe Stukenberg, four goals from Kacie Longo and four pointss from Caroline Steele. Maryland went up 7-0 in the first 14 minutes of the game as they began their 2017 championship run.
