Terps Open Series With 11-0 Shutout Of Purdue

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team shut out Purdue, 11-0, to open the the three-game weekend series in College Park on Friday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Maryland got its first shutout win of the season, as Nick Dean, Sean Fisher, and Zach Thompson combined to blank the Boilermakers. On the offensive side, eight of nine hitters in the Maryland lineup recorded hits, while six Terps had multiple base knocks.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland's series-opening shutout was its first shutout win since blanking Rhode Island in 2020, and its first Big Ten shutout since beating Indiana 2-0 on March 29, 2019.
  • Sophomore right-hander Nick Dean continued to be sensational on the mound, tossing his fifth-consecutive quality start. Dean went six innings, scattering six hits, striking out three, and walking a pair. Sean Fisher was dominant out of the bullpen, facing just a batter over the minimum in his two innings of work, while Zach Thompson closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
  • Justin Vought and Benjamin Cowles homered for the Terps, as Vought hit his fourth homer in a two-game span, while Cowles' 15th of the season continues his streak of homering in every weekend series this spring.
  • Maryland scored in every inning but the third and eighth, racking up a double-digit run total for the eighth time this season.
  • The Terps' 16 hits ties the second most hits that Maryland has recorded this season. Chris Alleyne, Matthew Shaw, Benjamin Cowles, Bobby Zmarzlak, Tommy Gardiner, and Troy Schreffler Jr. all got multiple hits on the evening.
  • Maryland got on the board early after a leadoff triple from Alleyne, who then scored on a Shaw sacrifice fly. Maryland then loaded the bases with a singles from Cowles and Zmarzlak and a walk issued to Gardiner, setting the table for Justin Vought. Vought cranked the first pitch he saw off and over the top of the batter's eye in center field, giving Maryland an early 5-0 advantage in the Friday night tilt. Vought's grand slam was the first Maryland grand slam since Zmarzlak did so against Bryant in 2020.
  • Cowles drove in his first run of the night with an RBI single in the second, giving Maryland a 6-0 lead.
  • Maryland scored two more in the fourth as a Shaw sacrifice fly (his second of the evening) drove home Alleyne, while Gardiner's RBI single extended the Terrapin lead to eight.
  • Shaw contined his great night at the plate with an RBI double in the fifth. Maryland's 10th run came courtesy of Gardiner again, as another RBI single drove home Orlando.
  • Cowles' homer in the seventh gave Maryland its final run, as the junior shortstop extended his streak of homering in every weekend series this season. The Newark, N.Y. native leads the league with 15 home runs and continues to build his case for Big Ten Player of the Year.
