Terps Win Series At #24 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Maryland baseball team took down No. 24 Michigan, 7-3, on Sunday to earn the series win against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor. It was Maryland's sixth-consecutive weekend series win and first ever series win in Ann Arbor.

What You Should Know
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander Sean Burke shined on the mound, tossing six and a third innings of three-run, four-hit ball. The Sutton, Mass. native struck out eight, his most strikeouts since striking out 10 a month ago today at Iowa.
  • Junior shortstop Benjamin Cowles kept his home run streak alive, hitting a two-run shot to deep left center to give the Terps a 2-0 lead in the first. Cowles has homered in every weekend series this year - 12 straight weekends - and extends his league-leading mark to 17 on the year.
  • Senior outfielder Randy Bednar hit his first homer since returning from an injury that left him out of the lineup for 15 games and the last four series.
  • Cowles' first-inning home run - and Bednar's solo shot in the next at bat - put the Terps on the board first in Sunday afternoon's rubber game at Ray Fisher Stadium.
  • Burke's lone blemish came in the second, as Michigan's first two batters of the inning reached, and a three-run homer from Ted Burton tied the game at three.
  • Maryland struck again in the third as Bednar's run-scoring groundout gave the Terps the lead, forcing Michigan to go to the bullpen early.
  • The Terps scored their next three in the fourth, as Troy Schreffler Jr. scored on a wild pitch, Matthew Shaw drove in one with a double, and Maxwell Costes drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • Burke retired 10 straight batters from the end of the fourth through the end of the sixth inning, working into the seventh but getting relieved after a walk and a strikeout in the seventh inning.
  • Elliot Zoellner entered in relief and induced a ground ball double play to the first batter he faced, getting Maryland out of the seventh inning. Zoellner worked a scoreless eighth, getting a strikeout with a pair of runners on to keep Maryland's four-run advantage safe.
  • Despite being blanked offensively late by Michigan's closer, Ryan Ramsey entered for the ninth looking to secure the win and the series. Ramsey built upon his brilliant outing Friday, walking the leadoff batter, but getting through the inning with a strikeout and a ground ball double play.
