Terps Win Series Against Indiana With Saturday DH Sweep

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team won both legs of its Saturday doubleheader, taking the first game, 4-3, in walk-off fashion in extra innings, and winning the second, 5-2, behind a masterful start on the mound from Sean Burke.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland has now won seven consecutive weekend series and 12 straight games at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
  • The Terps started Jason Savacool in Game One of Saturday's doubleheader, making up Friday's game that was postponed due to inclement weather.
  • Savacool was steady in his 13th start of the season, tossing six innings of three-run ball, striking out six. David Falco and Ryan Ramsey were both sensational out of the bullpen, as Falco tossed three scoreless, two-hit innings, and Ramsey chucked a perfect 10th to earn the W out of the bullpen.
  • Maryland struck first in Game One as double, hit batsman, and single set the table with the bases loaded. Bobby Zmarzlak drew the bases-loaded walk to open the scoring in the first inning and put the Terps on the board.
  • Indiana answered with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to even the score at one. The Hoosiers then took the outright lead with two in the sixth, courtesy of an RBI single and an additional sacrifice fly.
  • Maryland's two-run deficit was cut in half in the eighth, as a Matthew Shaw RBI grounder made it 3-2.
  • Maxwell Costes evened the score in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out, first-pitch solo shot over the left-center field wall to force extra innings. The home run was just the second of Costes' season.
  • Ramsey retired the Indiana side in order in the 10th, giving way for the Maryland offense looking for a walk off. After a walk and back-to-back hit batters, Benjamin Cowles drew the game-winning bases-loaded walk to secure the win in the series opener.
  • In Game Two, Sean Burke took the ball and delivered one of the most masterful outings of his career as a Terp. Burke went six and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit, and striking out 12 Indiana batters. Burke took a no-hitter deep into the seventh - giving up a two-out single up the middle to the last batter he faced - and earned his fifth win of the season on the mound.
  • Burke struck out the side in the second and fourth, retiring nine consecutive Hoosier batters before a walk in the seventh inning. Burke's 6 2/3 IP is the deepest he's worked into a game this season, while his 12 strikeouts is the second-most recorded by the Sutton, Mass. native this season.
  • Maryland got started eerily similar to Game One, as the Terps' first two runs came across via bases-loaded walks in the first inning. Luke Shliger and Tommy Gardiner both drew the RBI walks to open the scoring. Maryland wouldn't score again until the fifth inning as Costes' RBI double drove in a run.
  • The Terps scratched two more runs across in the seventh, as a Cowles RBI single drove home Shaw and a Shliger RBI single brought home Cowles.
  • Elliot Zoellner relieved Burke on the mound after his excellent showing, and largely kept the Hoosiers at bay - limiting them to two runs in his two and a third innings of work, striking out four.
  • Zoellner allowed Indiana's first run of the game via a solo homer in the eighth, and a two-out RBI single in the ninth gave them their only additional run.
Up Next
  • Maryland will honor its seniors for Senior Day on Sunday, as Maryland and Indiana face off for the third game of the three-game series in College Park. Senior Day festivities will kick off shortly before first pitch, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus and broadcast on the Maryland Baseball Network.
