ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Benjamin Cowles (First Team, SS), Chris Alleyne (Second Team, OF), and Ryan Ramsey (Second Team, RP) earned All-Big Ten honors, while Luke Shliger, Jason Savacool, and Matthew Shaw all earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors, as announced by the conference office on Sunday afternoon.
Cowles, Alleyne, and Ramsey all collect the first All-Conference accolades of their careers. Cowles put together one of the finest seasons in Maryland Baseball history, hitting 17 homers in 44 games while playing exceptional defense at short. Cowles' 17 home runs is tied for fifth-most in Maryland single-season history, and is the most by a Terp since Jason Maxey also slugged 17 in 2002. Named the Big Ten Player of the Week following his five-homer outburst in the Rutgers series, Cowles homered in all 13 consecutive weekend series before the streak was snapped in the last weekend of the season against Indiana.
Alleyne shined in his senior campaign, threatening in all facets of the game. One of the most reliable center fielders and leadoff hitters in the conference, Alleyne earns Second-Team honors after a 2021 season in which he slashed .306/.409/.561 and slugged eight homers, also stealing a conference-best 22 bases.
Ramsey bounced back from an up-and-down COVID-shortened freshman campaign, and electrified the Maryland bullpen on his way to Second-Team All-Big Ten honors. The sophomore left-hander led the team with a 1.82 ERA and made a team-high 15 appearances. Ramsey earned five wins on the mound and also collected two saves. He struck out 39 over 29 2/3 innings of work - precisely 12 K's per nine innings.
Savacool tied the conference lead for pitching wins with seven on his way to Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. The freshman phenom led the team in wins (7), innings pitched (72.0) and complete games (2). The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native also collected three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors along the way throughout his rookie year.
Shaw's sensational freshman year landed him a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, leading the Maryland team in batting average (.335), hits (56) and doubles (15). The Brimfield, Mass. native made an impact all over the diamond, earning starts in left field, at third base, and at second base, where he settled in during the second half of the season.
Shliger's presence behind the plate and impact in the lineup earned him a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, as the Danbury, Conn. native played in 33 games, starting 27 of them. Shliger hit .218 and added two homers and 13 RBIs in his freshman campaign.
Maryland's All-Big Ten honorees await their NCAA Tournament destiny, which they will find out Monday at noon on ESPN2's broadcast of the NCAA Baseball Championship Selection Show. Maryland hasn't played in the NCAA Tournament since the 2017 season.
