Terps Sweep Saturday DH Against Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Maryland baseball team won both games of its Saturday doubleheader against Illinois, securing its fourth consecutive series win. Jason Savacool carried the Terps in game one, as the freshman right-hander pitched into the ninth and kept the best offensive team in the conference at bay. Meanwhile, the offense dominated in the second game, exploding for six homers - three from senior catcher Justin Vought.

What You Should Know
  • The Terps' six homers in Game Two is believed to be Maryland's most homers in a game since also slugging six in a 21-4 victory against UMBC on March 10, 2004.
  • Vought's three home run game ties a school record for homers in a game - only the fourth time in program history the feat has been accomplished - and the first time since Tyler Bennett did so against Wake Forest in 2009.
  • Junior shortstop Benjamin Cowles continued his home run streak, homering in Game Two of the doubleheader. Cowles now leads the Big Ten in home runs with 14 and has homered in every weekend series this season.
Game One Notes
  • Savacool twirled a masterpiece in game one, tossing eight and a third innings, earning his sixth win of the season to improve to 6-1. Savacool's six wins is tied for the Big Ten conference lead.
  • The freshman right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced in order, and took a one-hitter into the seventh. Only accounting for a single run before running into trouble late in the ninth inning, Savacool gave way to closer Sam Bello, who allowed a pair of inherited runners to score, but secured the save.
  • Maryland plated a pair of runs in the second inning, as back-to-back RBI base knocks from Chris Alleyne and Matthew Shaw put the Terps up 2-0.
  • Illinois scored their first run of the day on a fielder's choice in the third. Maryland answered back with an Alleyne sacrifice fly in the top half of the fifth.
  • Troy Schreffler's RBI single in the sixth extended Maryland's lead to three. Alleyne's RBI single in the eighth - his third RBI of the day - made it a four-run game.
  • Savacool came back out for the ninth, looking for his third complete game of the year. The freshman induced a quick groundout before allowing back-to-back baserunners on a HBP and a single. Maryland skipper Rob Vaughn went with Bello, who gave up a two-run double but limited the damage and secured his seventh save of the season.
Game Two Notes
  • Maryland started quietly offensively, but got a strong start in the early innings with Connor Staine on the mound. Staine worked two and two third innings - allowing just a single run before handing the ball over to Elliot Zoellner to finish off the third.
  • The Terps got their own scoring started with a four-spot in the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Tucker Flint launched a three-run shot - his second homer in as many weeks - which was followed by Vought's first homer of the afternoon.
  • Sean Burke worked through the middle innings, tossing scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Vought blasted his second homer of the day in the top half of the sixth, which was followed immediately by Chris Alleyne's solo shot.
  • Sophomore reliever Ryan Ramsey surrendered a solo homer to lead off the seventh, but quickly retired the next three batters he faced.
  • Meanwhile, in the top half of the eighth, Vought's school-record tying third homer of the game made it 7-3, and Cowles' solo blast shortly thereafter made it 8-3.
  • The Fighting Illini bullpen struggled to put the Terps away in the top of the ninth, as Schreffler scored on a wild pitch, Vought drove home another run with an RBI single, and Shaw plated two with a single into the gap.
  • David Falco finished it off for the Terps, tossing an inning and a third to secure Maryland's 12-4 win and their fourth consecutive series win.
Up Next
  • Maryland returns to College Park next weekend to host Purdue for a three-game series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
