GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Maryland suffered a high-scoring 13-10 defeat to Charlotte in its opening game of the 2021 NCAA Tournament played at East Carolina's Lewis Field on Friday night. The Terps (28-17) will take on Norfolk State (25-27) on Saturday in an elimination game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN3 and heard on the Maryland Baseball Network. Charlotte will play host East Carolina at 6 p.m.

The game saw runs scored in every inning except the first and eighth innings.

JUST THE STATS

Maxwell Costes went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, smacking a home run.
Tommy Gardiner had two hits and three RBIs.
Randy Bednar also hit a home run and drove in two runs.
Jason Savacool (7-3) started and took the loss for Maryland.

BREAKING DOWN THE GAME

Maryland jumped on top in the second inning as Costes crushed a solo home run to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
Charlotte answered in the bottom of the second as Jack Dragum hit a 2-run homer to give the Niners a 2-1 advantage.
After the 49ers added another run in the third, Maryland tied the game in the top of the fourth as Gardiner and Troy Schreffler drove in runs to make it 3-3 in the middle of the fourth.
Charlotte put a 5-spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-3.
Maryland crept closer with two runs in the top of the fifth as Costes drove in Bednar on a groundout and Benjamin Cowles scored on a wild pitch, making it 8-5 in favor of Charlotte.
The Niners tacked on four runs between the fifth and sixth to go ahead 12-5.
Maryland rallied back with four runs in the top of the seventh with Gardiner driving in a pair and Costes and Bednar bringing home a run apiece to make it 12-9.
Bednar knocked Maryland's second home run of the night to draw the Terps within 13-10 in the ninth.

BACK IN THE NCAAs

Maryland is playing in its seventh NCAA Tournament and fourth in the last seven years (2014, 2015, 2017, 2021).
The Terps' last NCAA Regional appearance came in 2017, when Maryland went 1-2 at the Winston-Salem Regional. Prior to Maryland's appearance in 2017, the Terps made back-to-back Super Regionals in 2014 and 2015. Maryland is now 8-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
