GREENVILLE, N.C. -- #24 Maryland broke out the big bats as the Terps crushed a school NCAA Tournament record seven home runs in cruising past Norfolk State, 16-0, in the NCAA Tournament to eliminate the Spartans on Saturday afternoon at East Carolina's Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Terps (29-17) will play the loser of Saturday's second game between the host Pirates and Charlotte 49ers, on Sunday at Noon in an elimination game. That game can be watched on ESPN3 and heard on the Maryland Baseball Network.
The 16-0 shutout is the largest margin of victory in a shutout for Maryland since the Terps beat Coppin State, 27-0, on March 14, 2007.
POWER SURGE
- With the seven home runs, the Terps set their school record for home runs in an NCAA Tournament game, breaking the record of six set on June 3, 2017 against UMBC in Winston-Salem.
- The NCAA Tournament record for home runs in a game is nine.
- Six different Terps hit a home run vs. Norfolk State: Bobby Zmarzlak hit two with single shots coming from Randy Bednar, Maxwell Costes, Benjamin Cowles, Troy Schreffler and Justin Vought. Zmarzlak's two-homer game is his second multi-homer game of his career.
- Maryland scored 13 of its 15 runs via the home run.
- The Terps' seven home runs set a season-high surpassing the mark of six at Illinois on May 7.
- The 16 runs tied the Maryland record for most runs by the Terps in their NCAA Tournament history. Maryland beat UMBC 16-2 in the 2017 Regionals at Wake Forest.
ZMARZLAK'S CAREER DAY
- Zmarzlak had a career day with new personal highs of four hits, four runs scored, four RBIs and two home runs.
- The last Terp with multiple home runs in an NCAA Tournament game was Kevin Smith with two two home runs vs. UMBC in 2017.
- Zmarzlak's four RBIs are the most since Smith drove in six runs in that game.
- The four-hit game was the fourth by a Terp this season as he joined Chris Alleyne, Costes and Vought with a quartet of hits in a game.
MORE HOMER NOTES
- Cowles' 18th home run adds to his career-high and is the most by a Terp since John McCurdy had 19 in 2002.
- Cowles is now tied for fourth for home runs in a single-season behind Derek Hacopian (23 in 1992), McCurdy and Alex Pauley (19 in 1985). Cowles is tied with Paul Schager who had 18 in 1986.
- Bednar has hit homers in three consecutive games, including both NCAA Tournament games, and has four in his last six games.
- Costes' home run was his second in as many days in the NCAA Tournament and was his third in five games, all in the last week after only hit one in his first 30 games this season.
- Vought, who had a three-homer game against Illinois on May 8, has seven homers in his last 11 games.
BREAKING DOWN THE GAME
- Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Zmarzlak's three-run bomb on the first pitch he saw.
- The Terps added five runs in the third - keyed by Costes' three-run homer.
- Maryland hit four home runs in the fourth as the Terps added six more runs for a 14-0 lead after four. Cowles and Vought each hit 2-run blasts with solo homers coming from Bednar and Schreffler.
- Zmarzlak ripped his second homer in the sixth for a 15-0 lead.
- RIley Langerman drew a bases loaded walk to score Matt Orlando in the eighth to make it 16-0.
BURKE BLANKS 'EM
- Sean Burke tossed six shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight to earn the victory and move to 6-3 this season.
- It was the second consecutive game Burke threw six or more innings of shutout ball. He went 6.2 vs. Indiana last weekend without allowing a run. He struck out 12 in that game.
- He also has eight or more strikeouts in his last three games in a row.
THOMPSON FINISHES IT OFF
- Zach Thompson pitched the final three innings to earn his first-career save.
- He did not allow a hit and struck out three.
- It was his longest outing of the season in seven games.
BACK IN THE NCAAs
- Maryland is playing in its seventh NCAA Tournament and fourth in the last seven years (2014, 2015, 2017, 2021).
- The Terps' last NCAA Regional appearance came in 2017, when Maryland went 1-2 at the Winston-Salem Regional. Prior to Maryland's appearance in 2017, the Terps made back-to-back Super Regionals in 2014 and 2015. Maryland is 9-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
