Rob Vaughn Signs Five-Year Extension

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  University of Maryland Director of Athletics Damon Evans has announced an agreement with baseball head coach Rob Vaughn that extends his contract through June 2026. Vaughn's new five-year contract became effective this month.

"Coach Vaughn has continued to elevate the Maryland baseball program," said Evans. "This past season they finished second in the Big Ten, our best finish in a conference in more than 40 years. He has been a vital part in building one of the most successful eras in Maryland baseball history. In addition to the on-the-field performance, Rob has continued to develop a culture of growth and success. We are excited to extend Rob's contract keeping him in College Park coming off of one of the most successful seasons in school history."

"I'd like to thank Damon for believing in me and the direction that this program is heading," Vaughn said. "Maryland has everything that I've always wanted in a job: great academics, a great conference and the opportunity to win at the highest level. My extension is a direct result of the many players that I've had the opportunity to coach as well as the amazing assistant coaches that I've had the pleasure of working with everyday. A Texas boy and a Kansas girl have made Maryland home and I can't wait to continue in our pursuit to do things here that have never been done before. The future is incredibly bright here in College Park and I'm grateful to be a part of it for the long haul."

The 2021 season was a memorable one for Maryland as Vaughn guided the Terps to a pair of postseason wins and an appearance in the NCAA Greenville Regional Final at East Carolina in June. The Terps (30-18 overall) were one of the hottest teams in the nation in the second half of the season, posting an 18-4 record over their final 22 games, the best record among all Power Five schools in that span to conclude the regular season.

Maryland's 20-5 stretch from March 29 to May 21 was the best 25-game stretch in program history. Maryland won 12 consecutive game at home before its streak was snapped by Indiana in the regular-season finale. Maryland's 12 straight wins at home tied the longest home winning streak among Power Five teams this season. Its 12-game home winning streak was also the second longest in program history. Maryland's seven-consecutive series wins was the longest series winning streak of any Big Ten team during the 44-game, 13-week season.

Maryland had its highest Big Ten winning percentage (.636) since joining the conference in 2015. That conference winning percentage was Maryland's best since going .700 in the ACC in 1981, only playing 10 conference games that season.

The 2021 Terps finished the regular season second in the Big Ten, Maryland's best finish since joining the conference and its best regular season conference finish since ending 1980 second in the ACC.

First-team All-Big Ten selection Benjamin Cowles was named an All-American by Baseball America while Matthew Shaw was named a Freshman All-American by several outlets. Chris Alleyne and Ryan Ramsey were named to the All-Big Ten second team while Luke Shliger, Jason Savcool and Shaw were all named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team this past season.

Since Vaughn became head coach in 2018, six Terps have been drafted into professional baseball: Nick Dunn, Marty Costes, Hunter Parsons, AJ Lee, Sean Burke, and Benjamin Cowles. Vaughn also helped produce 22 draftees as an assistant coach at Maryland.

Overall, in four seasons at the helm of the Terps, Vaughn has a record of 93-82 (.531). He spent the previous five years on the staff at Maryland serving as an assistant coach in 2013-14, assistant head coach in 2015-16 and associate head coach in 2017. During that time, the Terps won two NCAA Regionals (2014 and 2015), setting school records for wins in those respective seasons at 40 and 42 victories.

In his nine years with the Terps, Maryland has posted a 273-204 record (.572 win percentage), with eight seasons of a .500 mark or better and six seasons of 30 or more wins.
