COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Former Maryland baseball player Kevin Smith was called up to join the Toronto Blue Jays, the team announced Wednesday.
Smith will become the fourth former Terp to appear in Major League Baseball this season and the 28th Terp to appear in the big leagues all-time when he makes his debut.
During his time at Maryland, Smith played a starring role as a freshman on the 2015 Super Regional squad that upset No. 1 UCLA in Los Angeles. The shortstop appeared in all 66 games his freshman season where he batted .273 with seven home runs, 34 RBI's and 11 stolen bases.
In 2017, Smith was a preseason All-American and hit a career high 13 home runs while notching a team-high 48 RBIs and slashing .268/.323/.552. He was selected in the 4th round, 129th overall in the 2017 MLB draft by the Blue Jays.
The East Greenbush, New York, native was productive in his first year in the Toronto system where he batted .274 for the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays to go along with 18 home runs, 49 RBI's and 17 stolen bases.
In 2021, Smith was assigned to the AAA Buffalo Bisons and became one of the best bats in the minor leagues. Smith is batting a career high .286 with career highs in home runs (19), RBI's (63) and stolen bases (16).
The Blue Jays are scheduled to face the Washington Nationals Wednesday in D.C., before opening up a three-game set against the Tigers in Toronto this weekend.
