2021-22 STORYLINES

ENHANCED SAFETY MEASURES
  • Maryland Athletics announced that a vaccine requirement will go into effect on January 9, 2022 for all indoor sporting events, including men's and women's basketball. The measure will remain in effect until further notice. Click here for the full release.
    • All attendees 12 years of age and older are required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result from a test within 48 hours of the game for entry into XFINITY Center. Attendees under the age of 12 are not required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test result. UMD students – already required to be vaccinated – do not have to provide proof of vaccination.
    • The requirement for indoor mask-wearing by all attendees will also remain in effect. All patrons who are not in compliance with the requirement will be issued a verbal warning. If that patron continues to not be in compliance with our policies, they will be required to leave the arena, without refund.
    • Fans are encouraged to allow for extra time to enter XFINITY Center for all upcoming events, including men's and women's basketball, gymnastics and wrestling. 
    • Fans must provide one of the following to gain entry:
      • COVID-19 Vaccination Card
      • Picture of COVID-19 Vaccination Card
      • Screenshot of COVID-19 Vaccination record from pharmacy (i.e. CVS, Walgreens, etc.)
      • Screenshot of test results of negative PCR or rapid antigen (home tests will not be accepted)
      • Fans 18 and older should be prepared to show a picture ID to verify ownership of the vaccination card or negative test. 
    • Once through a vaccination security checkpoint, attendees will continue through the screening process including wanding and ticket scanning.

  • No. 12/11 Maryland (12-6, 4-3 B1G) will host Northwestern (11-6, 3-3) Sunday at 1 p.m. in College Park.
  • Most recently, the Terps fell at Ohio State, 95-89, Thursday night in Columbus. Angel Reese led the way with 22 points and 11 boards. Chloe Bibby added 20 points and Katie Benzan scored 16. Diamond Miller and Ashley Owusu each scored 12.
  • The Terps are No.4 in the country in free throws made (276), No. 8 in scoring (81.7), No. 9 in assist/turnover ratio (1.32) and No. 10 in turnovers per game (11.9). Angel Reese leads the nation in offensive rebounds (5.4), is No. 4 in the nation in free throw attempts (120)  and No. 7 in double-doubles (11).
  • Sophomore Angel Reese and junior Ashley Owusu were named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 List in early January. Junior Diamond Miller and Owusu were named to the Wooden Top 50, Watch Watch and Naismith Trophy watch lists to start the season.
  • Katie Benzan was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award last month.
  • The 2021-22 Terrapins return all five starters from last year's Big Ten championship squad. The Terps also return 10 of 11 letterwinners and 93 percent of their scoring from last year's team that led the nation in scoring (90.8).
  • Maryland is ranked No. 12 in the latest AP Poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Terps were ranked No. 4 in the AP Preseason Poll, as well as in the Sports Illustrated and NCAA.com Preseason Polls. 
  • The Terps were picked to win the Big Ten by the league's head coaches and media panel. Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller were both named to the 10-player Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
  • Four Terps were named to watch lists for national player of the year for their respective positions. Owusu was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List (point guard), Miller and Katie Benzan were named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List (shooting guard) and Chloe Bibby was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List (small forward).

  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 20th season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 524-137 (.793), 14 conference titles, 17 NCAA Tournament bids in 19 postseasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, six Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • Frese was named National Coach of the Year by the AP, The Athletic and ESPN at the end of the 2020-21 season. In October, Frese was the first woman inducted into the Washington DC Metro Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14, 2021, Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).

  • Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15, the Terrapins are 132-18 (.880) vs. their conference opponents, including their 19-2 record in the Big Ten Tournament.
