COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With the season two weeks away, the Maryland women's lacrosse team has selected fifth-years Grace Griffin and Tori Barretta as its 2022 captains, head coach Cathy Reese announced Thursday.
 
With her selection as captain this season, Griffin becomes the first ever Terp to be a three-year captain, also being chosen in 2020 & 2021. 
 
"Grace and Tori are phenomenal, hard-working Terps and even better people who have set a positive example within our program for years now," said Reese. "They are both very deserving of being voted captains by their teammates and will do a great job of leading our 2022 team as we set out to accomplish our goals this season." 
 
Griffin, who has started in 63 games over four years as a Terp, was a IWLCA Third Team-All American last season and an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American this year.  The 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and 2019 National Champion has accumulated 106 goals, 41 assists, 147 points, 103 groundballs, 54 caused turnovers and 18 draw controls over four years as a Terp. Griffin was key in Maryland's 2019 National Championship run, scoring seven goals in the Final Four against Northwestern and Boston College. Currently a grad student, Griffin earned the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor last year and was named the University of Maryland Student-Athlete of the Year. 
 
Barretta will lead the Maryland defense this season after starting in all 17 games last season. An IWLCA Second Team All-Region and All-Big Ten Tournament Team selection, Barretta stood second on the team with 19 caused turnovers and fourth on the team with 25 groundballs in 2021. The Exton, Pa. native had at least one caused turnover in 11 of 17 games and six times had at least two. Barretta has played in 40 games with 19 starts over four years and like Griffin, was a member of the 2019 National Championship team. 
 
Griffin, Barretta and the Terps will open the 2022 season at Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
