Meet 190-year-old Jonathan, the World's Oldest-Ever Terp Fan

He's seen Berger, Shue, Lucas, Bias, Smith, Dixon, Vasquez, Trimble and Ayala. He's seen Ward, Scarbath, White, Esiason, Henderson, Diggs and Tagovailoa. He's seen Perazic, Bullett, Winters, Langhorne, Toliver, Thomas and Owusu. He's seen Nehemiah, Beardmore, Tyler, Meharg, Timchal, Cirovski, Reese and Tillman. The list goes on and on.

Meet Jonathan, a tortoise celebrating his 190th birthday this year, making him the oldest tortoise ever to live and the world's oldest ever Terp fan.

Guinness World Records, recently gave Jonathan the title officially of the world's oldest chelonian – a category which encompasses all turtles, terrapins and tortoises. For the sake of this story though, we'll call him the world's oldest Terp. This Terp already has a pretty significant distinction, having been named the world's oldest living land animal in 2019. The trophy case must be getting filled.

He is thought to have been born in 1832. The University of Maryland, originally known as Maryland Agricultural College, was founded in 1856. Our guy has seen the University go from an initial student body of 34 to one of over 41 thousand. Some even think Jonathan could be as old as 200!

So where is Jonathan watching his beloved sports teams? That would be St. Helena, one of the world's remotest islands, located 2,500 east of Rio de Janeiro in the South Atlantic Ocean. The island, under British control, is most known for being the site of the legendary Napoleon's exile after his final military defeat in 1815. Tough break.

We can only assume they get Big Ten Network in Saint Helena for Jonathan's sake.

According to CNN: The previous oldest chelonian was Tu'i Malila, a radiated tortoise that lived to be at least 188. Presented to the royal family of Tonga by British explorer Captain James Cook in around 1777, Tu'i Malila died in 1965.

The royal family of Tonga, also Maryland fans.

Food? Jonathan has a specific palate. Guinness tells us that among Jonathan's favorite foods are cabbage, cucumber, carrot, apple and other seasonal fruits. Not exactly the spread of a college student.

J has seen it all though, like the world's first photograph and the lightbulb and the moon landing blah blah blah. Here's what he really cares about. Jonathan has celebrated 46 team national championships and 16 individual national titles. He's witnessed 290 conference titles and three different conferences. He watched the kids do it, observed that overtime was in fact our time and saw a 2017 Memorial Day celebration that had people crying in the stands.

He's also been alive for 31 governors of his home island. Sheesh.

In the end, we celebrate Jonathan as we celebrate all our Terp fans, the best supporters in the world. We hope Jonathan sees 190 more years of Maryland success. We'll be cheering right along with him.

For more on Jonathan, props to CNN for this enterprising piece of reporting. And a big shout out to the people on St. Helena that take care of Jonathan. As his vet Joe Hollins said "He is a local icon, symbolic of persistence in the face of change". I think we can vibe with that persistence at some level.

Hopefully Joe has FOX on at 2:30 on Saturday so Jonathan can watch the Terps. Hey Joe, be sure to rub Jonathan's nose for good luck.
