No. 8 Terps Hold Michigan State To Zero Shots, Top Spartans 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 8 Maryland (8-2-4, 4-0-3) came away with a crucial 1-0 victory over Big Ten foe Michigan State (6-6-2, 3-2-1) in a game with major conference seeding ramifications on the line as the regular season winds down.

William Kulvik was in the right place at the right time on a Maryland corner kick to notch the game's only goal in the 13th minute of action. It was his second goal of the season.

The Terps had arguably their best defensive outing of the season, prohibiting the Spartans from attempting a single shot all game. Tonight marked the first time the Terps have held their opponent without a shot all match since 2006.

With the win, the Terps now have 15 points in the Big Ten standings and remain at the top with just one regular season conference match remaining.

Before the game, the Terps honored eight seniors and their contributions to the program.

The XI

Niklas Neumann (GK)
Luca Costabile (LB), Chris Rindov (LCB), William Kulvik (RCB), Nick Richardson (RB)
Joshua Bolma (MF), Joe Suchecki (MF), Alex Nitzl (MF)
Stefan Copetti (F), Hunter George (F), Griffin Dillon (F)

Breaking Down The Action
  • Kulvik opened the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute. Griffin Dillon got a touch on a Terps' corner kick that went to Chris Rindov who deflected it loose in front of the net for Kulvik to knock through.
  • Later in the half, Joshua Bolma whipped a beautiful service that Dillon headed towards the goal, forcing Michigan State's Owen Finnerty to come up with an impressive save.
  • The Terps controlled play and were stout defensively all half, holding the Spartans without a shot.
  • Bolma kicked off the second half with more impressive creation and found Stefan Copetti wide open thanks to a nifty pass, but the Terps couldn't capitalize on the chance.
  • Dillon sent another rocket at Finnerty as the match started to wind down, forcing another big save and keeping the offensive pressure on the Spartans.
  • The stifling Terp defense kept at it for the rest of the match and Maryland came away with the crucial 1-0 win.

Notable Numbers
  • 0: Michigan State's zero shots were the first time the Terps have allowed zero shots in a game since Sept. 26, 2006 against Loyola. The Terps won 1-0 behind a Maurice Edu goal.
