College Park, MD -- Maryland field hockey swept the Big Ten weekly awards, with
Danielle Van Rootselaar,
Rayne Wright, and
Sophie Klautz each receiving honors, the conference announced Monday. The Terps are the first team this season to claim all three weekly awards.
Â
Danielle Van Rootselaar earns Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after an outstanding eight point weekend. The Bilthoven, the Netherlands native scored all four Maryland goals, including consecutive overtime game winners to lift the Terps over No.3 Iowa and No. 2 Northwestern. The midfielder converted three penalty corners and one unassisted goal line drive to help the Terrapins claim two top-5 road victories in a three day period. The graduate student also receives this week's Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week award, given to a Maryland student-athlete each week of the 2022-23 campaign.
Â
Rayne Wright receives her first career Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award after anchoring the Terps defensive effort over the weekend. Wright was a key defender for the Maryland defensive unit that held No.3 Iowa and No.2 Northwestern each to a singular goal. Wright and the Maryland defense limited Iowa and Northwestern to a combined seven shots on goal and eight penalty corners. The Bethlehem, Pennsylvania native was also a key piece in holding Northwestern fifth-year forward Bente Baekers to just one shot on goal over the entire 60 minutes of game action.
Â
Sophie Klautz takes home her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the 2022 season in the wake of Maryland's 2-0 weekend. The Oegstgeest, The Netherlands native was a key contributor in two top-three ranked victories this weekend for the Terrapins. Klautz was a prominent part of the Maryland attack, frequently finding her way into the shooting circle and looking to create for others. The freshman put a shot on goal in each contest and had three looks at the net overall.
Â
These honors come after two top-three ranked victories for the Terrapins over No.3 Iowa and No.2 Northwestern. The Terps are now the only Big Ten school which remains undefeated in conference play and the lone one-loss team overall.
