Ahearn, Cordingley Earn B1G Weekly Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Both midfielder Shaylan Ahearn and attacker Aurora Cordingley earned Big Ten weekly honors, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Ahearn was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week after leading Maryland to a 19-15 advantage in the draw circle in the win at No. 10 Virginia, securing six draw controls herself. The junior was integral in Maryland's 8-0 third quarter that fueled the comeback, winning seven of nine draw controls in the quarter to give the Terps constant possession and scoring two-straight goals to extend Maryland's lead from 11-9 to 13-9.
A Second Team All-Big Ten selection a year ago, Ahearn now stands 10th in the nation in draw controls, averaging eight per game. This is Ahearn's first career Big Ten weekly honor.
Cordingley was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row after a six point (four goals, two assists) in the win over No. 10 Virginia. The graduate attacker scored all four of her goals in the second half to lead Maryland's comeback in which the Terps outscored Virginia 11-4 to secure the win, including the game-tying goal to even the game up at nine in the third quarter and then assisted on Libby May's goal to give Maryland a 10-9 lead. In the fourth quarter when Virginia cut the lead to one, Cordingley had two huge goals to ice the game and put Maryland up 16-13.
The Ontario, ON native had a game-high three groundballs and was fantastic on the ride, causing two Virginia turnovers to give Maryland possession back, including one that led to an immediate goal in the third quarter. Cordingley leads the Big Ten and ranks ninth in the country with 4.5 goals per game through two weeks this season.
Cordingley has now earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after both of her first two games as a Terp, becoming the first Maryland player to win a Big Ten honor in consecutive weeks since Lizzie Colson earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on March 16 & 23 last year and the first Maryland player to win back-to-back Offensive Player of the Weeks since three-time Tewaaraton winner Taylor Cummings won on March 23 & 30 in 2015.
Maryland opens up its home slate this Saturday with a huge top-10 matchup against No. 7 Florida, set for opening draw at noon at The Plex. Purchase tickets here.
