Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 5 Terps Top No. 7 Gators in Home Opener, 18-8

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Aurora Cordingley racked up a career-best 10 points, the most by a Terp since 2013, on four goals and six assists as No. 5 Maryland pummeled No. 7 Florida, 18-8, on Saturday at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Terps moved to 3-0 on the young season with the win.

Cordingley's 10 points were a career-high and the most by a Terp since Alex Aust had 11 against UMBC on March 5, 2013, which was also the last time a Terp had six or more assists. The graduate transfer's 10 points were the sixth-most in school history.

"Overall, just a great home opener for us, I'm really proud of this group," said head coach Cathy Reese. "What a great environment today. The sun was shining and we welcomed a top-10 team to College Park. Florida is a really talented team and they challenged us all over the field. I thought our girls had some  ups and downs but we're learning a lot about ourselves and just showed a lot of toughness as we went through the game today so I'm very proud of our overall effort."

Hannah Leubecker paced the offense with Cordingley with four goals. Shannon Smith posted a hat trick, her highest total as a Terp. Grace Griffin, Libby May and Eloise Clevenger all scored two goals.

The Terps defense was stellar all afternoon as it limited the Gators to just 22 shots. Emily Sterling made seven saves between the pipes for Maryland.

Shaylan Ahearn was in control at the draw all day as she won 14 draws. Overall, Maryland held the large 24-6 advantage on draws.

Maryland held a 9-6 lead at half before holding Florida scoreless in a 4-0 third quarter and overall two goals in the second half. The Terps ride was fantastic in the game, holding Florida to only 9-of-15 on the clear. May and Clevenger, both attackers, led the Terps with two caused turnovers.
