Ramsey Ks 13 As No. 24 Terps Conquer Cornell, 12-5

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 24 Maryland received strong starting pitching and posted an eight-run fourth inning to beat Cornell 12-5 on Sunday afternoon at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium to move to 12-2 on the season and remain perfect at home at 5-0. 

Ryan Ramsey was stellar on the mound recording a career-high 13 strikeouts, while allowing just one hit in six innings. His 13 Ks were the most by a Terp since Sean Burke struck out 13 against Michigan State on March 5, 2021. Ramsey struck out at least two batters in each inning he pitched. 

Maxwell Costes went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, including a two-run home run and a two-run double. He has homered in three of his last four games. 

Matt Shaw drove in a pair of runs as well. Jacob Orr went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Bobby Zmarzlak went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. 


Breaking Down The Action 
  • Maryland took a 2-0 lead on a Maxwell Costes two-run homer in the second inning.
  • The Terps opened the floodgates in the fourth inning with an eight-run inning as seven different players drove in a row, including Costes with a two-run double to score Shaw and Chris Alleyne. That put the Terps up 10-0.
  • Shaw's run-scoring single in the fifth brought home Riley Langerman to make the score 11-0.
  • Cornell got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh. 
  • Ryan Ross clubbed a grand slam in the eighth to draw Cornell within 11-5. 
  • Zmarzlak scored on a throwing error by the catcher after stealing third in the eighth. 
  • Matt Orlando closed out the game with two scoreless innings of work for Maryland.

  • 5: The Terps are a perfect 5-0 at home this season. It's the best start to a season at home since 2017 when Maryland won its first 10 home games in a row to start the season. 
  • 6: Maxwell Costes has a team-high six home runs this season.

  • 8: The Terps scored an inning season-high eight runs in the fourth inning.
