COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team swept the Big Ten weekly honors after an impressive 16-6 win over No. 12 Rutgers, the conference announced Tuesday.
Hannah Leubecker was selected as the Co-Offensive Player of the Week, Jordyn Lipkin was named both the Midfielder of the Week and the Freshman of the Week and Emily Sterling was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Leubecker led the Terps with six points (four goals, two assists), a season high and the second-most by any Big Ten player this week. The junior made four-of-six shots, an impressive .667 shooting percentage and was perfect on free position attempts, going 3-for-3. Leubecker also secured two draw controls, both of which were turned into immediate goals, and caused a turnover on the ride.
A First Team All-Big Ten selection a year ago, this is Leubecker's second career Offensive Player of the Week honor, last year winning on March 2. Maryland has now won Offensive Player of the Week in five of six weeks this season, with Aurora Cordingley being named four times.
Lipkin continued her breakout start to the season, totaling a season-best five points (three goals, two assists). The freshman had all five points in the second half, helping the Terps extend their lead to 10 when Rutgers cut the lead to 7-5 early in the third quarter. Lipkin's five points were the most by a Maryland freshman in four years, since Grace Griffin had five against Penn State on April 19, 2018.
This is Lipkin's second Freshman of the Week honor in three weeks and first career Midfielder of the Week honor. Lipkin becomes the second Terp to win Midfielder of the Week this year, with Shaylan Ahearn winning twice.
Sterling was terrific in cage, making a season-high 10 saves and only allowing six goals, a 62.5% save percentage. The junior held Rutgers, a team that was averaging over 16 goals per game, to only six goals and a 25% shooting percentage. One of the best goalies in the nation this season, Sterling has a .537 save percentage and a 7.24 goals against average, both top-five in the country. Over the last five games, Sterling has a 60% save percentage, tallying 39 saves to only 26 goals allowed and an incredible 6.12 goals against average.
This is Sterling's first career Defensive Player of the Week honor. She becomes the second Terp to win it this year, with Abby Bosco being selected on March 8.
Leubecker, Lipkin, Sterling and the Terps will be back in action for two home games this week, hosting Penn tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network and No. 15 James Madison on Saturday at noon. Buy tickets here.
