CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Maryland softball fell to Virginia on Tuesday afternoon, 10-2. The Cavaliers scored seven runs in the second inning, and the game ended via mercy rule as Virginia held an eight-run advantage after five innings.
Virginia got its offense going in the first. After back-to-back walks and a sac bunt opened the home half of the inning, Cavaliers clean-up hitter Katie Goldberg ripped a two-RBI triple. They kept it going in the second inning, in which those seven Cavaliers crossed the plate.
Maryland strung three straight hits together in the third, off the bats of Kiley Goff, Jaeda McFarland and Megan Mikami. Goff had a single, McFarland collected a two-bagger, and then Mikami drove them both home with a double of her own. Ruby Butler got a hit in the fourth inning but was left stranded.
Courtney Wyche started in the circle and Haley Ellefson was the first to relieve her.
The Terps dropped to 9-10 on the season, while Virginia improved to 13-9.
