Sterling Earns National, Conference Weekly Accolades

COLLEGE PARK, MD – After a career-high 13 saves in a dominant defensive effort over Penn State on Thursday night, goalie Emily Sterling was named both the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Sterling tallied 13 saves in a 13-6 win over the Nittany Lions, an incredible .684 save percentage. It marked Sterling's third-straight game giving up less than six goals and having over a .667 save percentage.
The junior and the Maryland defense held Penn State to a season low in goals, holding the Nittany Lions to only six goals on 23 shots, a .261 shooting percentage. In the second half, Sterling totaled eight saves to only two goals allowed in the second half, an .800 save percentage.
A Second Team Midseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, Sterling leads the country in save percentage (.560) and goals against average (7.23) and backlines a defense only allowing 7.33 goals per game, the second best mark in the country. In three games of Big ten play, Sterling has 35 saves to only 18 goals allowed, a remarkable .660 save percentage.
This is Sterling's first ever IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week honor and third Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, including her second in as many weeks. Abby Bosco was also selected as the Defensive Player of the Week on March 8. In total, Maryland has won 14 weekly honors this season, led by four Offensive Player of the Week nods from Aurora Cordingley.
Sterling and the Terps will be back in action for two road games this week, tomorrow night at No. 12 Princeton and Sunday at Ohio State, which will air on the Big Ten Network.
