Cordingley, Sterling Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- After two road wins against No. 12 Princeton and Ohio State, both Aurora Cordingley and Emily Sterling were named Big Ten Players of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Cordingley earns Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for the fifth time this season, the most offensive weekly awards by any Big Ten player since Tewaaraton winner Taylor Cummings also was selected for the award five times in 2015. This is the third week in a row that Sterling has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and fourth time this season, the most by any Big Ten player since Tewaaraton winner won the award in six consecutive weeks in 2019.

The nation's points per game leader, Cordingley had two more seven point games this past week, while shooting .642 percent, leading the Terps to a 19-9 win at No. 12 Princeton and a 14-8 win at Ohio State. Against No. 12 Princeton, Cordingley recorded five goals and two assists, shooting 62.5-percent, while also picking up two groundballs and causing a turnover. In a 14-8 win at Ohio State, the graduate student had four goals and three assists to pace the Maryland offense, shooting 66.7-percent, while recording the 100th assist of her career. Cordingley now has 90 points on the year (54 goals, 36 assists) to lead the country in points per game (6.43). 

The nation's save percentage leader, Sterling was phenomenal in goal, tallying over a 50-percent save percentage in each game, totaling 19 saves to only 17 goals allowed, a 52.8 save percentage, while keeping both opponents to single digit goals and also recording four groundballs and a caused turnover. Sterling shut the Buckeyes out for the entire second half and final 35 minutes of the game, making six straight saves without allowing a goal over that time span to lead to a 14-8 win, tallying nine saves in total in the contest. In the win against No. 12 Princeton, sterling tallied 10 saves to only nine goals allowed, a 52.6-percent save percentage, shutting Princeton out in the fourth quarter. Sterling leads the country with a .554 save percentage and has over a 50-percent save percentage in five straight games. 

Cordingley, Sterling and the Terps will be back in action on Saturday for a huge contest against No. 2 Northwestern. The game will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex and air on the Big Ten Network.
