BALTIMORE, MD – A solid defensive effort led by a career-high 12 saves from Emily Sterling led the No. 8 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 17-6 win over No. 20 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon.
This marks the 750th program win for the Maryland women's lacrosse program, becoming the first program in women's lacrosse to reach this milestone. Maryland is now 750-149-3 as a program.
"Proud of our team's effort today," said head coach Cathy Reese. "Hopkins is always a really hard fought game and after the close games we had last year to come in here and have the second half that we had is a really great area of growth for our team. Great day and we're ready now to prepare for the next one."
The Maryland defense held the Blue Jays to only one goal in the second half as Sterling saved 67-percent of the Hopkins shots. The scoring was balanced offensively with five different Terps tallying at least two goals, led by Libby May who had four. Hopkins shot just 25-percent in the game overall.
Maryland ended the game on an 8-0 run, holding Hopkins scoreless over the final 21 minutes of the game. The contest was capped off by defender Abby Bosco racing down the field and scoring her first goal as a Terp with 1:18 left in the game.
Shannon Smith had a career-best nine draw controls to lead the Terps in the circle while also posting two goals and an assist. Eloise Clevenger, Hannah Leubecker and Aurora Cordingley all also scored two goals, with Clevenger also picking up an assist.
Maryland moves to 10-1 on the season and 2-0 in Big Ten play. The Terps will continue their conference slate at home on Thursday night against Penn State, slated for a 6:30 p.m. opening draw on the Big Ten Network.
