COLLEGE PARK, MD – After career days to lead the Maryland women's lacrosse team to clinch a share of the Big Ten title against No. 2 Northwestern, attacker Libby May and goaltender Emily Sterling both racked up numerous national and conference honors, announced on Tuesday.
May was named both the Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after a seven goal, eight point performance to lead the Terps to a 15-9 win over the Wildcats. Both mark the first career honors for May.
Sterling was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth straight week, the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and the USA Lacrosse National Player of the Week. The nation's leader in save percentage was also selected as the Solomon Eye Terp of the Week.
May scored seven goals on only nine shots, an excellent .778 shooting percentage, including five points in the second half (four goals, one assist) to extend lead and lead Terps to ultimate victory. The junior's eight points are the most by any Big Ten player this week and the second most by any Big Ten player in a conference game this season.
This marks the second straight week Maryland has won both the Inside Lacrosse and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors, with May's teammate Aurora Cordingley taking home both awards last week.
Sterling tallied a career-high 16 saves to only nine goals allowed, a 64-percent save percentage, holding an offense averaging 17 goals per game to only nine. The junior recorded 10 saves in the first half to hold Northwestern to only five goals. Sterling now has a .564 save percentage on the season, the best in the country and a .632 save percentage in Big Ten play, 60 saves to only 35 goals allowed. Named a Tewaaraton Nominee this past week, Sterling has over a 50-percent save percentage in every Big Ten game this season.
This is the fourth week in a row that Sterling has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and fifth time this season, the most by any Big Ten player since Tewaaraton winner Megan Taylor won the award in six consecutive weeks in 2019.
May, Sterling and the Terps will look to clinch the outright Big Ten title this Saturday at No. 21 Michigan, with the game starting at noon and airing on ESPNU.
