PERFECT! Ryan Ramsey Pitches A Perfect Game In No. 23 Terps' 13-0 Win

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Ryan Ramsey raised his arms in the air as the No. 23 Maryland baseball players poured out of the dugout. He was perfect.

As Nick Lorusso made a throw across the diamond to seal it, the Dirty Terps were finally able to celebrate. In his first Friday night start, Ramsey retired all 27 hitters he faced.

Coming into the 2022 season, there had only been 33 in NCAA history — just 19 in nine-inning games. Ramsey becomes the first Maryland pitcher to toss a perfecto since Dick Reitz on April 10, 1959, against Johns Hopkins — which was the first perfect game in NCAA Division I history. It was the Terps' first no-hitter since March 1, 2014, when Jake Stinnett no-hit UMass.

"I might coach the rest of my career and never have another one," head coach Rob Vaughn said. "There are no words for that."

Maryland baseball couldn't have been much more perfect on Friday. On the other side, every player in Maryland's lineup recorded at least a hit as the offense totaled 13 runs on 17 hits.

The 13-0 victory is the Terps' 34th of the season. That's already tied for their second-most regular season win total in school history, trailing 2015's 36-win campaign. Their 34-8 record is their best start in school history. The Terps are 10-3 in the Big Ten.

Ramsey Is Perfect!

  • The lefty from Montvale, N.J., couldn't have impressed more as he became head coach Rob Vaughn's Friday night starter this week.
  • He struck out 10 Northwestern (19-18) hitters and threw 118 pitches.

Bubba Is Blasting

  • Alleyne launched a solo home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the first inning.
  • It was the fifth year's 14th long ball of the season. That leads the Big Ten.
Breaking Down The Action
  • Alleyne's solo shot gave Maryland a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Maxwell Costes and Bobby Zmarzlak crushed back-to-back home runs in the second inning, giving Maryland a 3-0 advantage on a trio of solo blasts. It was the second time this season that the Terps recorded back-to-back dingers.
  • Alleyne scored Shliger on an RBI single later in the 2nd, making it 4-0 Terps early.
  • Keister and Shliger both ripped RBI singles in the 3rd, putting Maryland ahead, 6-0, and knocking Northwestern starter Sean Sullivan out after 2.2 innings pitched.
  • Alleyne kept it going, singling and scoring Keister — making Bubba 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the third inning.
  • Shliger came home on a wild pitch and Nick Lorusso hit an RBI single, giving the Terps a 9-0 lead through three innings.
  • Lorusso crushed a solo blast to center in the fifth inning. Costes ripped an RBI double, Zmarzlak hit an RBI triple, and the Terps led 12-0 through five.
Costes Keeps Crushing
  • Costes now has 36 career home runs, good for second-most all-time in program history.
  • He now trails only Paul Schager's 43, which were hit between 1984-87.
  • Costes also got hit by a pitch for the 59th time in his career. He is now eight away from Kyle Convissar's 67 hit-by-pitch mark, set between 2011-14.
Notable Numbers
  • 0: Northwestern didn't get a single player on base.
  • 1: This was Ramsey's first-ever Friday night start.
  • 6: Six Terps recorded multi-hit games.
  • 9: Each player in Maryland's lineup had at least a hit.
  • 10: Ramsey struck out 10 batters for the third time this season and
  • 17: Alleyne got on base for the 17th straight game.
  • 17: Keister now has a 17-game on-base streak.
  • 20: Ramsey pitched the 20th 9-inning perfect game in NCAA Division I history.
