Friday Night Dubs! No. 17 Terps Rally To Beat Michigan, 8-7

COLLEGE PARK, MD — A Troy Schreffler Jr. sprint home on an eighth-inning wild pitch lifted No. 17 Maryland baseball to an 8-7 win over Michigan on Friday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Dirty Terps scored five runs in the fourth inning and rallied back to win in their final inning at the plate, before Nigel Belgrave slammed the door in the ninth.

Maryland improves to 39-10 overall and 14-5 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines fall to 25-22 and 10-9 in the conference.

Jason Savacool started on the mound and struck out seven hitters over six innings of work. The Baldwinsville, New York, native surrendered a run on just four hits. Sean Heine, Nick Robinson, David Falco Jr. and Nigel Belgrave finished the day on the hill.

Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw slugged back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning for the Terrapins. Their high-powered offense scored five runs in the fourth inning, capped by Kevin Keister's eighth home run of the season.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Lorusso and Shaw hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first inning, giving Maryland an early 2-0 lead.
  • Maryland put up a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Shaw and Troy Schreffler Jr. worked back-to-back walks to set the table, Bobby Zmarzlak ripped an RBI single and scored them both. Ian Petrutz followed with an RBI double to right field, and then Keister launched a two-run shot. The Terrapins took a 7-0 lead.
  • Michigan's Jake Marti hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning to make it 7-1.
  • The Wolverines tied the game with a six-run 7th inning, capped by a Matt Frey three-run shot to center.
  • After stealing third base, Schreffler Jr. dashed home on a wild pitch to give the Terps an 8-7 advantage.
  • Two of Belgrave's three outs in the ninth came via the strikeout as Maryland closed out its win.
