
Eight Terps Garner All-Big Ten Honors

COLLEGE PARK, MD – After finishing the regular season 15-1 and winning the Big Ten with an undefeated 6-0 record, eight members of the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team earned All-Big Ten honors Wednesday.
Maryland has five players on the first team and three more on the second team, the most in the conference.
Graduate students Abby Bosco and Aurora Cordingley and junior Emily Sterling are unanimous selections while graduate student Grace Griffin and junior Hannah Leubecker are also on the first team. Senior Maddie Sanchez and juniors Shaylan Ahearn and Libby May earned a spot on the second team.
The Terps eight players are the most in the conference (next closest, Rutgers, had five) and tied for the most ever, with the Terps also securing eight honors in 2015 and 2019.
The Terps also have the most unanimous selections with three. Both the first and second teams consist of 16 players. There are seven unanimous selections.
Maryland has garnered 87 all-conference honorees in head coach Cathy Reese's 12 seasons. This is the third time that Griffin has earned All-Big Ten distinction, the second time for Cordingley, Ahearn and Leubecker, and the first time for Bosco, Sterling, May and Sandhez.
Bosco leads Maryland's tenacious defense, which is second in the country, holding opponents to just 7.62 goals per game. Defending the opponents best player, Bosco has been key to holding 13 of 16 opponents to under 10 goals. A Tewaaraton nominee, Bosco ranks ninth in the nation in groundballs, averaging three per game and also leads the Terps in caused turnovers (22) and stands second in draw controls (63).
Cordingley stands fourth in the country and leads the Big Ten with 5.94 points per game and also stands first in the conference in assists with 39. The leader of the Maryland offense averaging close to 16 goals per game, Cordingley is a four-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week selection, tied with Taylor Cummings (2015) for the most in the history of the league. The Tewaaraton nominee has at least five points in 12 of 16 games, has at least six points in 10 of the last 15 games and is the first Terp with two double-digit point games in a season since Alex Aust in 2013, tallying 11 (six goals, five assists) against Villanova (3/13) and 10 (four goals, six assists) against No. 7 Florida (2/26).
Sterling has been the best goalie in women's lacrosse this season, leading the nation with a .567 save percentage and 7.59 goals against average. The junior has over a 50-percent save percentage in 11 of 16 games this season and is saving at an amazing .626 clip in Big Ten play, the best ever in conference play by a Big Ten goalie. Sterling has double digit saves in five of six Big Ten games, including a career-best 16 against No. 2 Northwestern on April 23. A Tewaaraton nominee, Sterling has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week five times this season, including four straight from April 5-26.
Griffin has played every minute for the Terps this season, serving as the leader of the outright Big Ten champions. The three-time captain stands fifth on the team with 28 points and second on the team with 13 caused turnovers, helping lead a Maryland defense that is second in the nation in goals allowed and has held 13 of 16 opponents to single digit goals. The 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, this is Griffin's third First Team honor.
Leubecker has been key on a Maryland offense that has scored more than 13 goals in every Big Ten game this season. The junior stands second on the team in both points (53) and goals (45) and also has 16 groundballs, 10 draw controls and seven caused turnovers. Leubecker has at least one point in every game this season and at least a hat-trick in nine of 16 games. Her second straight season with 50-plus points, Leubecker was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on March 22 after a six point outing vs. No. 12 Rutgers.
Ahearn has led Maryland's draw effort this season, winning 56-percent of all draw controls this season and leading the Terps with 74. The junior was key to wins over No. 7 Florida, winning 24 of 30 draw controls, including a career-high 14 herself and No. 12 Princeton, securing nine draw controls. A two-time Big Ten Midfielder of the Week, Ahearn has totaled 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) and seven caused turnovers.
May stands second on the team in points with 53, having a career season with 44 goals and nine assists. The junior was huge in Maryland's biggest win of the season over No. 2 Northwestern, totaling a career-best seven goals and eight points en route to earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and National Player of the Week honors. May had at least a hat trick in eight of 16 games this season and tallied at least one point in every game.
Sanchez has been a constant force on the second ranked Maryland defense that has held 13 of 16 opponents to single digit goals this season. The senior stands second on the team in both groundballs (24) and caused turnovers (13) and has played every minute of every game this year. Sanchez has seven games with at least two groundballs and four with at least two caused turnovers.
Maddie McSally was named Maryland's sportsmanship honoree.
Since Big Ten lacrosse began back in 2015, Maryland has had 47 All-Big Ten selections.
The Attack Player, Midfielder, Defensive Player and Goaltender of the Year, along with the Freshman and Coach of the Year, will be announced on Monday, May 9 following the conclusion of the Big Ten Tournament.
The top-seeded Terps will take on No. 4-seed Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Friday in Piscataway, NJ. Opening draw is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
