No. 17 Terps Drop Game 2 At Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ — No. 17 Maryland baseball lost the second game of its doubleheader against Rutgers, 18-7, on Sunday at Bainton Field. The Terrapins fell to 37-10 and 12-5 in Big Ten play.

Troy Schreffler Jr. robbed Scarlet Knights third baseman Tony Santa Maria of a home run with a spectacular catch, leaping at the right-field wall to bring the ball back during the fourth inning.

Maryland and Rutgers (37-11, 16-4 Big Ten) meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for the rubber match. As the Scarlet Knights currently hold a 2.5-game lead over the Terps in the Big Ten standings, it'll be an opportunity for head coach Rob Vaughn's squad to move a full game closer and win this crucial series.

Kevin Keister's first career grand slam gave the Terps the lead in the second inning.

Jason Savacool started on the mound but exited in the second inning, as did Scarlet Knights' starter Nathan Florence, making it a bullpen day for both teams.

Schreffler led the offense with a pair of hits, an RBI and two runs. Lorusso, Shaw, Costes, Zmarzlak and Keister also recorded hits.

Breaking Down The Action

  • Rutgers grabbed the lead in the home half of the first inning on an RBI groundout. Two more came home on a single and error as the Scarlet Knights took a 3-0 advantage.
  • And Maryland quickly got those runs back. Kevin Keister crushed his first career grand slam in the second inning, and the Dirty Terps took a 4-3 lead.
  • The Scarlet Knights tied the game at four in the home half of the second on a Ryan Lasko solo shot to straightaway center field. Another two-run shot in that same inning gave Rutgers a 6-4 advantage.
  • They added five more in the third and two more in the fifth.
  • Maryland got a run on back-to-back doubles by Maxwell Costes and Troy Schreffler Jr. in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Shaw hit an RBI double and Schreffler scored Lorusso on an infield hit in the seventh.
