ROSEMONT, Ill. – After winning both the Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament titles, three Terps earned 2022 Big Ten individual honors, as voted on by the league's seven coaches and announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Aurora Cordingley was named the Big Ten Attacker of the Year, Abby Bosco was chosen as the Big Ten Defender of the Year and Emily Sterling was selected as the unanimous Big Ten Goaltender of the Year.
Cordingley has had an all-time great season as Maryland's lead attacker this season, totaling 111 points (62 goals, 49 assists), of which the points and assist totals put her No. 5 all-time in program history. A captain on this year's team, Cordingley ranks top three in the nation averaging 6.17 points per game and 2.72 assists per game. Cordingley totaled 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) in this past weekend's Big Ten Tournament en route to earning MVP honors. A Tewaaraton Nominee, Cordingley has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week four times this year, the USA Lacrosse National Player of the Week twice and the IWLCA Offensive Player of the Week twice.
Bosco has led a Maryland defense that is allowing 7.56 goals per game, the second lowest mark in the country. The Big Ten's leader with 55 groundballs, Bosco has defended the opponents best player this season, helping hold 15 of 18 opponents to under 10 goals. A Tewaaraton nominee, Bosco leads the team with 22 caused turnovers and stands second with 78 draw controls. Bosco was named to the All-Big Ten Tournament team after tallying 15 draw controls and seven groundballs over the two game tournament. The graduate student was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on March 8.
Sterling has been spectacular in goal all season long, leading the country with a .552 save percentage and a 7.52 goals against average, 149 saves to only 121 goals allowed. In conference play, Sterling set the Big Ten record for the highest save percentage ever by a goalie, standing at an incredible .626. The junior has over a 50-percent save percentage in 11 of 19 games this season and has double digit saves in seven games, including a career-high 16 in the Big Ten Regular Season Championship against No. 2 Northwestern. Sterling has been named the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week three times this season, the USA Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week once and has been selected as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week five times, the most since Tewaaraton recipient Megan Taylor in 2019.
Maryland has now won the Big Ten Defender of the Year award in each of its seven years in the conference, with Bosco becoming the sixth Terp to earn that distinction (Megan Douty, 2015; Alice Mercer, 2016; Nadine Hadnagy, 2017; Julia Braig, 2018-19; Lizzie Colson, 2021). Cordingley becomes the Terps fourth Big Ten Attacker of the Year with Megan Whittle winning in 2016 & 18 and Brooke Griffin in 2015. Sterling is the first Terp to win Big Ten Goaltender of the Year since Megan Taylor won all four years of her career from 2016-19.
Rutgers and Northwestern earned the conferences other awards, with Cassidy Spilis earning Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and Melissa Lehman being selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Northwestern's Samantha White is the league's Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
The Terps will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament this weekend. Maryland will face the winner of the Duke-Johns Hopkins first round game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
