Benson spent two incredible seasons in College Park as the Terps went 33-1 and most recently won the 2022 National Championship. During that time Maryland also won four Big Ten Titles and had 21 USILA All-Americans.
Benson's offense averaged 16.85 goals per game on 43.15 shots per game over his 34 games as a Terp. Exemplified by balance, the offense had seven 10+ goal-scoers in 2021 and 11 in 2022. Known for ball movement, this past year's Terps set the NCAA record for assists in a season with 204.
Individually, his schemes helped secure Jared Bernhardt and Logan Wisnauskas as back-to-back Tewaaraton Winners in 2021 and 2022. They were both also named Big Ten Offensive Players of the Year. Those two now own the two highest single-season point totals in Maryland history alongside the two best career totals.
Loved by the team for his stoic demeanor and sense of humor, Benson will be missed in College Park.
"I'm very excited for Bobby and his family to have this opportunity," Maryland Head Coach John Tillman said. "Providence hit a home run and has hired a proven winner. Bobby will help each member of his team become their very best as students, people and players."
Benson becomes the fifth assistant coach under Tillman to become a head coach since Tillman became Maryland's head coach in 2011. The others are Ryan Moran (UMBC), Kevin Warne (Georgetown), Kevin Conry (Michigan), and J.L. Reppert (Holy Cross).
Benson's wife, Taylor, is a graduate of Providence. They're joined by their two sons, Tucker and Griffin.
