
Emily Sterling Selected as Honda Award Finalist

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Goalkeeper Emily Sterling the Maryland women's lacrosse team was named as one of four finalists for the Honda Sport Award Thursday.
Sterling solidified herself as the best goalkeeper in America in 2021, this week being named the IWLCA National Goalkeeper of the Year.
The unanimous Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, this is the latest honor in a long list of accolades this year for Sterling. The junior was an IWLCA First Team All-American, a Tewaaraton nominee, First Team All-Big Ten selection, a four-time National Player of the Week and five-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
Sterling was the best goalie in the nation this entire season, standing second in the country with a .531 save percentage and 7.87 goals against average, while recording the highest save percentage ever in Big Ten play at .626. The junior finished the year with 169 saves to only 149 goals allowed, had over a 50-percent save percentage in 12-of-21 games, had double digit saves in seven games and had a stretch of seven games from March 30 - April 30 where she had over a 50-percent save percentage in every game. Sterling was huge in Maryland's win over No. 2 Northwestern on April 23 to win the Big Ten Regular Season Championship, tallying a career-best 16 saves to only nine goals allowed.
Maryland has won the Honda Award eight times. Megan Taylor most recently won the award in 2019, Zoe Stukenberg won in 2017, while Taylor Cummings won three years in a row from 2014-16. Current assistant coach Caitlyn Phipps earned the award in 2010. Jen Adams was Maryland's first recipient of the Honda Award, winning it in 2000 and 2001. Last season, Lizzie Colson was a finalist.
Ally Mastroianni (North Carolina), Charlotte North (Boston College), Jamie Ortega (North Carolina) were also named finalists.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented during the live telecast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda on CBS Sports Network on June 27, at 9 ET/6 PT.
The lacrosse finalists were chosen by a panel of coaches and experts representing the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Honda Sport award winner for lacrosse will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
