Terp Summer League Report

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Taking a look at all that Maryland baseball's student athletes accomplished this summer now that collegiate baseball leagues have wrapped up.
 
Cape Cod League
The Terps have five players participating in the Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League this summer; Matt Shaw (Bourne Braves), Nigel Belgrave (Bourne Braves), Luke Shliger (Y-D Red Sox) Nick Lorusso (Brewster Whitecaps) and Kevin Keister (Brewster Whitecaps).
 
The 2022 Cape Cod League Most Valuable Player and a CCBL champion, Shaw excelled at the plate this summer. The Brimfield, Massachusetts native hit for a league leading .363 batting average while sitting near the top of the league with five home runs, 17 RBIs and a .414 OBP. Shaw demonstrated this tremendous stretch behind the plate by becoming the first player since 2011 to hit for the cycle in the Cape Cod league during an 8-1 victory over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. The infielder made a significant impact in Bourne's Championship series, going 3-5 from the plate with one home run and two RBIs in the title clinching game.
 
Belgrave also played a role for the 2022 champion Braves, pitching important innings out of the bullpen. The Auburn, Massachusetts native has appeared in 11 games, striking out 10 batters in 14.1 innings. Over those innings Belgrave accumulated a 3-0 record and a 3.14 ERA. Belgrave was a key factor at the end of games earning three saves.
 
Shliger, a 2022 Cape Cod League All-Star, was a force at catcher for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The Danbury, Connecticut, native slashed .273/.412/.299 over 27 games played. Both average and OBP ranked top-5 on the Y-D Red Sox.
 
Lorusso was an impact player for the Brewster Whitecaps at the end of the 2022 summer season. The Monroe, Connecticut native batted .379 with 11 hits and 6 RBIs across seven regular season games. Lorusso was also a major factor in playoff action posting a .304 batting average and bringing in five RBIs in six postseason games.
 
Kevin Keister played in 11 games for the Brewster Whitecaps batting .206 while accumulating seven hits and four RBIs.
Cal Ripken Collegiate League
Maryland baseball was well-represented in the Ripken League with six terps suiting up this season; Jacob Orr (Olney Cropdusters), Michael Bouma (Olney Cropdusters), Michael Walsh (Olney Cropdusters), Andrew Johnson (Bethesda Big Train), Sean Lane (Bethesda Big Train) and Travis Garnett (Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts).
 
Johnson and Lane were each key players for the Bethesda squad. Johnson appeared in 7 games accumulating 12.2 innings pitched. Over those 12 innings the Mount Airy, Maryland native has earned a 2-1 record with a 3.55 ERA and a team leading 19.18 K/9 ratio.
 
Lane notched 19 hits, 22 RBIs and 24 walks over 31 games. His RBI and walk totals ranked no. 2 on the Bethesda roster. The Big Train finished the regular season tied for first place with a league best 26-10 record.
 
Orr, Bouma and Walsh were all contributors for the Cropdusters this summer. Orr hit .264 with 19 hits and 18 RBIs over 21 games.
 
Bouma batted .242 with two home runs and eight RBIs in only nine games. Walsh pitched in five games accumulating eight strikeouts and one save.
 
Travis Garnett started two games for the Thunderbolts.
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Two Terps, Ian Petrutz and Ryan Van Buren will return to College Park as Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Champions, both suiting up for the Amsterdam Mohawks. The Maryland duo made an impact for the champions, helping the Mohawks earn their 6th PGCBL title.
 
Petrutz was consistent at the plate batting .277 with 13 RBIs, 20 walks, and nine stolen bases over 31 games. The Mantua, New Jersey native had a breakout playoff performance batting .571 with one home run and three RBIs.
 
Van Buren pitched in six games, earning a 2.70 ERA and accumulating seven strikeouts.
 
USA Collegiate National Team Camp
Maryland pitcher Jason Savacool was invited to participate in USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team Camp located in Cary, North Carolina. Savacool pitched in two games during Team USA's Stars vs. Stripes series. In those two appearances, the Baldwinsville, New York native pitched four innings, allowing one hit and zero earned runs.
 
Futures Baseball League
Zach Martin was the lone Terp in the Futures League playing for the 2022 champion Nashua Silver Knights. Martin played in 26 games, batting .256 while recording 23 hits and 19 RBIs.
