Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 4 Terps Best Stanford 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Danielle Van Rootselaar scored her second goal in a Maryland uniform and that was all the No. 4 Terps needed en route to a 1-0 win over Stanford on a Monday afternoon at the Maryland Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse Complex in a game that also aired on Big Ten Network.

The Terps and the Cardinal battled in a low-scoring affair with impressive showings from both goalkeepers and defenses. Maryland
outshot Stanford 23-4 and dominated possession throughout the entire game.

Maryland moved to 2-0-0 on the season.

Coach Missy Meharg's Take

"All you have to do is win by one goal so I'm super pleased that we found that goal. I also think that the opportunity to practice having to hold onto the ball when the other team has numbers up and four minutes on the clock is amazing."

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps kept the offensive pressure on the Cardinal early in the first quarter, drawing a quick two corners and taking four shots. They broke through just over 10 minutes in when Van Rootselaar scored off a penalty corner for her second goal as a Terp.
  • Maryland continued to dominate possession throughout the first half, finishing the period with 13 shots and seven penalty corners. Defensively, the Terps did not allow the Cardinal to get into any sort of offensive rhythm.
  • Led by Van Rootselaar, who finished with a game-high eight shots, the Terps kept the pressure on the Stanford defense throughout the third quarter, but were again unable to capitalize with a goal.
  • The Terps again relied on a stout defense in the fourth quarter to keep the shutout intact.

Nothing Getting Through Here
  • Goalkeeper Christina Calandra recorded her first career shutout.
  • Calandra's two saves tied a career-high from Oct. 29, 2021 against No. 24 Ohio State.
  • "It feels awesome," Calandra said. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without the girls in front of me so I have to give them some credit as well. The ball has to get through everyone before it gets to me, and I think today it truly showed how we worked together as as a team to get this victory.

Notable Numbers
  • 8: The number of penalty corners Maryland earned, to Stanford's 2.
  • 19: The shot differential the Terps created.

Series History
  • With the win, the Terps moved to 9-0-0 all-time against the Cardinal.

Up Next
  • Maryland will hit the road for the first time this weekend and travel to Newton, Massachusetts for the B1G/ACC Cup. The Terps will face Boston College on Friday at 6 pm before battling Duke on Sunday at noon.
