B1G Time
- Rainelle Jones was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on August 29 after an opening weekend with 23 blocks and 15 kills.
- This is the third career Big Ten weekly honor for Jones after earning two last season.
Fresh Faces
- The 2022 Terps feature a quartet of fresh faces between freshmen and transfers. With four newcomers on a team of fifteen, over a quarter percent of the roster is new. On the opening weekend, 38.8 percent of kills came from newcomers.
- A 2021 AVCA High School All-American, Laila Ivey is a premier outside hitter and was one of the top recruits in her class. A three-time team captain and two-time All-Conference in high school, Ivey recorded 28 kills over the opening weekend with 12 in her official debut.
- First-team All-District and Second-team All-Conference, Ally Williams is a defensive wizard from St. Louis, MO. After finishing with over 1,000 digs in high school she's ready to make her mark in College Park.
- Incoming from her hometown of Pittsburgh, Anastasia Russ immediately became the tallest Terp when she joined the quad. Part of Pitt's Final Four run last season, Russ is an imposing presence at the net. Over the opening weekend, she recorded 19 kills and 11 blocks with an impressive .543 hitting percentage.
- A grad transfer from Temple, Gem Grimshaw has been one of the AAC's top attackers over the past four seasons. Last year, she tallied three blocks, 14 kills, and 14 digs in a five-set thriller against Maryland.
Blocking bonanza
- Maryland has cemented itself as one of the premier blocking teams across the NCAA and are currently sixth in the nation with 3.5 blocks per set.
- Rainelle Jones is currently second in the nation with 2.56 blocks per set.
- As a team, the Terps tallied 3.11 blocks per set to lead the country in 2021. The next closest team, Tennessee, had 3.01 awhile no other team had more than three per set.
- Individually, Rainelle Jones ranked atop the country among individuals with 1.73 blocks per set. No other student-athlete had more than 1.51 per set. No one else had more than 1.45 over the season.
Connections
- Both South Florida and Georgetown feature players from DC, Maryland, or Virginia. South Florida boasts Tatiana Johnson, a Frederick, Maryland native.
- Unsurprisingly, Georgetown features three student-athletes from the area: Chanelle Smith, Mary Grace Goyena, and Karis Park.
