No. 9 Terps Win Second Consecutive Battle For The DMV, Dominate Virginia 6-1

Box Score WASHINGTON, DC -- The No. 9 Terps scored their most goals against Virginia since 1975 and thrashed the Cavaliers 6-1 at Audi Field, coming out on top in the "Battle of the DMV" and the most storied rivalry in college soccer for the second year in a row.

The Terps struck first in the 21st minute after Colin Griffith forced his way inside the box and drew a hard penalty. With rain pouring down around him, Malcolm Johnston coolly stepped up to take the penalty kick and sent Virginia goalkeeper Holden Brown in the opposite direction of his shot.

Maryland added to its lead with the first half winding down as senior Justin Harris scored his second career goal.

The Terps added four more goals in the second, one each from Chris Rindov, Griffin Dillon Joshua Bolma and German Giammattei

Bolma came off the bench and did not play in the first half due to a lingering injury, but made a massive impact in the second half, recording two assists and one goal.

Maryland moved to 2-1-1 this season.

Coach Sasho Cirovski's Takes

"Really, really proud of the team performance tonight. That was an inspired response to a disappointing performance on Friday. From the first whistle to the last whistle, I think our guys played with a tremendous amount of pride. Our defending was relentless, our attacking today was ruthless for the first time all year, and it was more like the kind of Maryland team that I think we should be."

"We are not Maryland soccer without the respect that we have for Virginia and from, sort of, chasing them. The idea of iron sharpens iron has been true to our rivalry. I have so much respect for Virginia and I think our series over time reflects it. (It's) certainly two of the Mount Rushmore programs in college soccer. This means a lot for our alumni and our fans, and, selfishly for me, it's an important one because I came to Maryland chasing Virginia. Anytime we get a positive result it's a source of pride... To come out tonight with a commanding victory is really sweet."

Player's Perspectives

"Coming off a disappointing loss last game, I think we had something to prove," Johnston said. "The Battle of the DMV is one of the bigger games we always have marked on the calendar and, as you can see, I think we had a lot of energy and showed that we're one of the top teams in the nation and have the ability to score goals. It's very exciting that we were able to get six (goals) against Virginia."

"It's certainly a great feeling," Bolma said of the rivalry win. "We're buzzing, it's great. Coming off a loss, this is what we needed to propel us into the coming games."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Hunter George energized the Terps early, drawing three quick fouls within the first 10 minutes of action.
  • In the 21st minute, Griffith drew a tough penalty inside the box and Johnston stepped up to make the penalty kick.
  • Virginia started to show some offensive consistency, but Maryland snatched that away with just a few minutes left in the first half as Giammattei flashed some nifty footwork before dropping the ball off to Justin Harris who knocked it past Brown. Both Giammattei and Harris came off the bench.
  • The Terps did not allow the Cavaliers to record a single shot on goal throughout the first half. They also drew 12 fouls during that span and committed just five.
  • The Cavaliers had a prime scoring opportunity in the 54th minute as Leo Afonso was fouled inside the box, drawing a penalty kick. Afonso attempted to fool Niklaus Neumann in goal but Neumann correctly predicted Afonso's shot and made a diving save to his right.
  • Just a couple minutes later, the Cavaliers were again on the attack and likely would have scored if it weren't for intense hustle from Joe Suchecki who made a diving slide tackle to stop the threat.
  • In the 60th minute, Bolma lifted a ball into the box and Rindov leapt above the Virginia defense to head the ball in.
  • Not even five minutes later, Griffith streaked down the field on a breakaway and dumped it off to Bolma who made a perfect cross that Griffin Dillon booted into the goal.
  • Bolma added a goal of his own late and the Cavaliers managed to score one with Maryland making multiple substitutions.
  • The Terps weren't done yet as Giammattei scored with under eight minutes left, bringing the final score to 6-1.

Major Milestones
  • Griffith, a true freshman, recorded his first career start, making an immediate impact on the attacking end.
  • All six goals came from players who were yet to score this season. It was Dillon's first career goal.
  • Giammattei recorded his first goal as a Terp.

Notable Numbers
  • 4: The number of points Bolma recorded in just 18 minutes of action.
  • 6: Maryland's six goals today were the most of the season and most scored against Virginia since 1975, also a 6-1 game. It was also most goals in any game since a 6-0 victory over California in 2012. A different player scored all six goals for the Terps today.

Up Next
  • The Terps will wrap up DMV Derby Week on Saturday at 1 pm when they travel to Georgetown.
