Three Terps Named D1Baseball Pre-Season All-Americans

College Park, MD -- Jason Savacool, Matt Shaw and Luke Shliger were each named 2023 Division I Pre-Season All-Americans, D1Baseball announced Monday. Shliger receives first-team honors while Savacool and Shaw earn second-team selection. This is the third pre-season All-American honor for the trio each being named by Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball News. The Terps were also selected as the No. 13 ranked team in the nation by D1Baseball earlier in the month.

As a fundamental part of the weekend rotation in 2022 Savacool was dominant, striking out 123 batters while pitching a team-high 107.2 innings. The Baldwinsville, New York, native finished his sophomore campaign with an 8-3 record and a 2.93 ERA. Savacool enters 2023 after receiving multiple honors last season, including being named a All-Big Ten First Team selection, and a D1 Baseball All-American.

Shaw, who also received third team All-American honors from Baseball America on Monday, has now earned a spot in each of the four major pre-season polls. The shortstop was a 2022 All-Big Ten First Team selection, entering 2023 after a breakout campaign that saw the shortstop bat .290 with 22 home runs, 67 RBIs, and 34 walks. The Brimfield, Massachusetts native was the Perfect Game Baseball Summer Player of The Year after leading the Bourne Braves to the Cape Cod Baseball League Title. Shaw batted for a league-leading .363 average while earning a place near the top of the league with five home runs, 17 RBIs and a .414 OBP.

Shliger, a 2022 All-Big Ten Second Team selection, starred at catcher and batted leadoff in 2022. The Danbury, Connecticut native led the Terps with a .353 batting average, 88 hits, 79 runs, and 54 walks on the season. Shliger looks to lead the Terps once again from the top of the lineup after topping the team with a .495 on-base percentage.

Maryland baseball will begin its season at University of South Florida on Friday, Feb. 17, before hosting their home opener against West Virginia on Tuesday, Feb. 21st.
