No. 7 Terps Fall In Regular Season Finale At No. 1 Northwestern

Box Score EVANSTON, IL -- No. 7 Maryland field hockey entered the day with a chance to clinch the Big Ten Championship for the second consecutive season, but came up just short against No. 1 Northwestern, losing 5-1.

The Wildcats, who have won 16 in a row, scored the first three goals of the game and the Terps could not recover down the stretch. Maci Bradford scored Maryland's goal in the second quarter with assists from Josie Hollamon and Hope Rose on the play.

Maryland now sits at 14-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten. Northwestern improves to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in conference play. The Terps will be the third-seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which will begin on Thursday, Nov. 2 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. 
 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Northwestern started the game with a lot of pressure on Maryland's defense. The Cats put up three shots and found the goal with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter to take an early lead.
  • The Cats found their second goal shortly after the first, as they drove through the middle of the circle to beat Alyssa Klebasko and find the cage.
  • Northwestern opened the second quarter with a redirected shot, slipping it by Klebasko and extending their lead.
  • Maryland found some offensive momentum in the second quarter, earning back-to-back corners. Maci Bradford found the cage off a deflection from a shot from Josie Hollamon, giving the Terps their first score.
  • Northwestern opened the second half with a goal, regaining a three score lead. Maryland made a change at goalkeeper with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. Paige Kieft came in to defend for the Terps.
  • The Cats added the final score of the night in the fourth quarter, securing a 5-1 victory and an undefeated conference season.

  • Maryland will begin postseason play next week on Thursday, Nov. 2 as part of the Big Ten Tournament. The third-seeded Terps will play at 5 pm on B1G+ with their opponent still to be determined.
