Three-Seeded Maryland To Open B1G Tournament Against Six-Seeded Iowa

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Nationally ranked No. 8 Maryland field hockey begins postseason play against No. 7 Iowa in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.

The Terps clinched the 3-seed after finishing the conference season 6-2. They open the Tournament against the 6-seed Iowa Hawkeyes on November 2 at 5 p.m in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Terps are seeking their third B1G Tournament title since joining the conference in 2014 and thirteenth tournament title in program history.

  • Maryland holds a 19-6-1 all-time series record over Iowa, dating back to 1984. Head coach Missy Meharg has led the Terps to a 18-6 record over the Hawkeyes.
  • The Terps are 7-1 all-time against the Hawkeyes in the postseason. Maryland bested Iowa in 2018, 2-1, to clinch its latest tournament title.
  • Maryland has earned ten wins over Iowa since joining the Big Ten in 2014.
  • These programs met earlier this season with Maryland upsetting the then-No. 5 Hawkeyes, 4-1.
  • The four goals the Terps scored over Iowa are the most anyone has scored against the Hawkeyes since Oct. 29, 2017. The four goals also tie the most Maryland has ever scored against Iowa, equaling the four the team scored in 2016.

Regular Season Highlights
  • No. 8 Maryland finishes the regular season 14-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The Terps fell in their final regular season match against No. 1 Northwestern on Thursday.
  • Maryland has outscored its opponents 47-23 this year.
  • The Terps rank fourth in the Big Ten in goals per game average (2.61) and points per game average (7.22).
  • Maryland allowed only four first quarter goals through 18 games and outscored teams 17-4 in the first fifteen minutes. 12 of those 17 goals happened in the first six minutes of each game.
  • The Terps are 13-2 in games where they score first and 11-1 when they lead at halftime.
  • Maryland collected six wins over ranked opponents this season, including four Big Ten teams. 
  • This season, the Terps faced eight teams they held an undefeated all-time record against. Maryland went 8-0 against those programs.

  • With a 6-2 conference record, Maryland clinched the three-seed to open the Big Ten Tournament. 
  • The Terps will play six-seeded Iowa in the third and final game of opening night. With a win over the Hawkeyes, Maryland will then face the winner of two-seeded Rutgers and seven-seeded Michigan the following day. 
  • The winner of the semifinal game heads to the championship on Sunday, November 5.

  • Hope Rose leads the Terps in goals with 12 on the year. She posted her first career hat-trick against Miami (OH), leading Maryland to a 3-1 victory. She leads the team in points with 26, from 12 goals and two assists.
  • Margot Lawn tallied a team-high nine assists, including a season-high two assists against Yale. She owns the second highest point total at 23, from seven goals and nine assists.
  • Alyssa Klebasko has started a majority of games in goal for the Terps. She earned two consecutive Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors during the final stretch of the regular season. She ranks second in the conference in save percentage (.844) and goals-against average (.968).
  • Maci Bradford owns the second highest goal total with nine on the season. She scored a career-best two goals against Princeton in September. Bradford has tallied two goals in the last two games.
  • Sammy Popper and Hannah Boss own the fourth and fifth highest point total on the team. Popper tallied 15 points from seven goals and one assist, while Boss owns 13 points from four goals and five assists.
  • The Terps utilize the depth of their bench as they average 15 players participating per match. 13 players have tallied at least one point on the year, including nine goal scorers.

  • Missy Meharg returns for her 36th season as head coach. A nine-time National Coach of the Year recipient, Meharg brings an unprecedented level of consistency and excellence to the Maryland field hockey program. 
  • Meharg became the third coach in Division I history to reach 600 wins in 2021. She is not shy of championships as she has led the Terps to seven national titles, including five in seven years, 12 conference tournament crowns, 15 conference regular season titles and 20 appearances in the NCAA Semifinals round, including 12 in the NCAA Finals.
  • She is supported by associate head coach Scott Tupper (third season), assistant coach Kasey Tapman Asper (third season) and goalie specialist Natalie Hunter Cyrus (first season).
