
Terps Rally Late, But Lose At Northwestern, 33-27

Taulia Tagovailoa became the seventh quarterback in Big Ten history to reach 10,000 passing yards as he finished with 274 yards in the game to give him 10,079 as he was 30-of-47 with three touchdown passes in the game.
Jeshaun Jones had a career-high tying nine receptions for 78 yards to top the receiving charts for the Terps. Roman Hemby caught a 24-yard touchdown pass as he gained 68 all-purpose yards. Tai Felton also hauled in a touchdown.
Colby McDonald led the Terps' ground game with 43 yards on five carries.
Defensively, Tre Colbert had two sacks while Taizse Johnson, Ruben Hyppolite II each had one for Maryland. Beau Brade led the Terps with eight tackles, including a TFL. Jaishawn Barham and Fa'Najae Gotay each made seven stops.

- The Terps drove right down the field in 2:10 as Tagovailoa connected with Felton for an 8-yard scoring pass play to open the game. The drive was keyed by a 36-yard end-around rush by Kaden Prather. It was the earliest scoring drive of the season. Northwestern took advantage of a turnover and tied the game at 7-7 on a Cam Porter 1-yard rush. On the ensuing drive, a Braeden Wisloski 34-yard kickoff return set up a drive that finished with a 24-yard catch and run by Hemby. Northwestern responded with a 23-yard touchdown reception by Bryce Kirtz to even the game at 14-14 with 2:42 left in the first quarter.
- Northwestern took its first lead of a game at 21-14 on Porter's second touchdown of the game, a 3-yard pass from Brendan Sullivan, 2:43 into the second quarter, capping a 97-yard drive. The teams traded field goals in the final 1:18 of the half as Wildcat Jack Olsen kicked a 33-yarder and Terp Jack Howes booted a 34-yarder for a 24-17 Northwestern edge at halftime.
- Maryland got back within one possession on a Howes 22-yard field goal with 4:45 left in the third quarter, making it 27-20.
- Northwestern regained a two-possession lead at 30-20 on an Olsen 19-yard field goal with 9:19 left in the fourth quarter. Olsen hit a 33-yarder with five minutes left for a 33-20 score. Maryland marched down the field in 1:20 to get back within one score at 33-27 on an 18-yard reception from Tagovailoa to Jones with 3:42 left in the fourth quarter. The Terps were driving to potentially tie the game, but Tagovailoa was intercepted with 1:25 left in the fourth.
Taulia Adds To His Records
- Tagovailoa continued to add to his career passing yardage today with 274 passing yards in the game as he now has 10,079 in his career. The quarterback holds the Maryland career records for passing yards, passing touchdowns (70), total touchdowns (82), completions (864), completion percentage (66.6),passing efficiency (146.5) and total offense 10,366.
- He became the seventh player in Big Ten history to reach 10,000 career passing yards with 10,079. On Saturday, he passed Penn State's Trace McSorley and his 9,899 yards. Next on the list at is No. 6 Brett Basanez (10,580 from 2002-05) with Northwestern.
- Tagovailoa moved to a tie for ninth in career passing touchdowns in Big Ten history with three in the game, giving him 70 in his Maryland career. He passed Iowa's Nathan Stanley (68), Purdue's David Blough (69) and is tied with Penn State's John Navarre (70).
Defensive Highlights
- The Terps had five sacks in the game for the second week in a row, coming off a five-sack game vs. Illinois in their last outing.
- Tre Colbert post two sacks for the Terps.
- Taizse Johnson had his first full-sack of the season and first since a full-sack at Michigan State last season.
- Ruben Hyppolite II recorded a sack on the next play after Johnson's sack, giving the senior his first sack since the 2020 season when he had two sacks at Penn State (Nov. 7, 2020).
- Donnell Brown had his third sack of the season - and second in as many games. He had 10 sacks in his career at FCS Saint Francis (Pa.).
Jones In The Record Books
- Jones moved to ninth in career receptions with a career-high tying nine catches in the game. He now has 129 in his career as he passed Russ Weaver (120, 1992-94) and Dontay Demus Jr. who recorded 128 receptions from 2018-2022. Next on the list is No. 8 Levern Jacobs (2012-16 with 130).
- He moved to ninth in career receiving yards with 78 yards in the game, as he now has 1,749. He passed Barry Johnson (1987-89) and Greg Hill (1982-84), each with 1,721 and Marcus Badgett (1989-92) with 1,748. Next on the list at No. 8 is Azizuddin Abdur-Ra'oof with 1,895 from 1984-87.
Streaks
- Corey Dyches caught a pass in his 21st game in a row.
- Taulia Tagovailoa has throw a touchdown pass in each of his last 11 games.
- Delmar Glaze has started 25 games in a row on the offensive line.
Notes and Nuggets
- The Terps now have 35 points on opening drives of the game, the most in the Big Ten.
- Prather's 36-yard rush early in the first quarter, was the second longest run by the Terps this season as Roman Hemby had a 40-yard rush against Charlotte.
